The rubber is about to meet the road.. Afghanistan

If the President sends more troops into Afghanistan.. I will not be surprised. He ran on that during the primary and during the election against McCain.

He said he was going to double down in Afghanistan.

And it looks like he is going to do that.

If this is true, I won't be happy about it, but I believe that Obama is making what he thinks is the best decision given the shitty circumstances. The decision I'm sure was not an easy one. That being said, I'd like the Afghan operation wrapped up as quickly as possible and I hope Obama is truly receiving the best data possible and more importantly going forward with the best plan possible to accomplish this.

If in fact he is going to send more troops I hope when he announces it he also lays out the details of his plan as well as mission goals and timetables and makes it clear it is no way open ended.

8. Lets see what he says on Tuesday

Obama is between a rock and a hard place on this. If he pulls out he risks being labeled as weak on security and losing to a Republican in 2012. If he stays in and the war is a disaster he risks losing to a Republican in 2012.

Now some might say that it's disgusting for him to be putting his political future over the lives of our troops and the Afghan peoples who will die in the process. I would agree except for the fact that it would be worse if a Republican gets elected in 2012 and starts more wars.

Think about it this way. Jimmy Carter decided not to bomb Iran during the embassy crisis. If he had we might have been spared 8 years of Reagan. When you think about it from an extremely cynical angle, the dead Iranians would've been a drop in the bucket compared to the suffering that people endured all over the world because of Reagan's policies.

I think Obama is looking for some kind of "peace with honor" way out of this conflict because ultimately that got Nixon re-elected.

At least not to that extent. I believe his concerns have more material security related foundations. But that's my analysis, YMMV.
