Congressional Black Caucus PAC Endorses Hilliard

During a swing through Washington, D.C., last week to promote his Congressional bid, Alabama state Rep. Earl Hilliard Jr. (D) picked up the endorsement of the Congressional Black Caucus political action committee and held a fundraiser with Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).

Hilliard is running in the open 7th District seat of Rep. Artur Davis (D-Ala.), who is leaving Congress to run for governor. Hilliard is the son of ex-Rep. Earl Hilliard (D), who was ousted by Davis in a Democratic primary in 2002.

"I wish you the best of luck in the coming election and am pleased to support your efforts," CBC PAC Chairman Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) said in statement to Hilliard's campaign.

The 7th district is a majority black and overwhelmingly Democratic seat. Among those who are challenging Hilliard in the crowded primary is Birmingham attorney Terri Sewell, a longtime associate of Davis. Sewell has proven to be a strong fundraiser and showed over $300,000 in cash on hand as of Sept. 30.

Hilliard ended the quarter with just $29,000 but had earned notable contributions from Reps. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), who are members of the CBC.
