****Heads Up: POTUS Presents the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award, Live! ****
Edited on Mon Nov-23-09 06:04 PM by Clio the Leo
(Forgive me this indulgence, but I like using the words "Barack Obama" and "Robert F Kennedy" in the same sentence whenever possible.)

The 44th President gives an award named in honor of the man who should have been the 37th.

More about the honoree....

President Obama will speak Monday at the White House event where the 2009 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award will be awarded to Magodonga Mahlangu and her organization, Women of Zimbabwe Arise. After Obama speaks, Ethel Kennedy will present the award, includes a cash prize of $30,000 and on-going legal, advocacy and technical support through a partnership with the RFK Center, at a ceremony in the East Room of the White House at 6 p.m.

4. I will never cease to be amazed.......
.... at the sight of the Kennedys all geeked out to see Barack Obama. They had their little cameras out and everything. That's something else.

6. The Kennedys LOVE that man
The real deal, Old School Kennedys absolutely LOVE Obama. The Teddy's, Caroline's, Ethel's, Eunice's etc.

It drives many insane that he gets so much love from them. That makes it all the sweeter imo. :)

9. "And now it's on to Chicago and let's win there!"
I will NEVER forget the moment when the irony of RFK's final public words hit me.

8. One of the men speaking said....
..... while welcome people to the WH, "Mr. President, it's good to see YOU here at the White House! Isn't it!? Isn't it great to have Barack Obama in the White House!" and then praised him on his effort to stop torture and move toward providing universal health care.

"President Obama treats other nations like he treats individuals, with respect and dignity. Like Robert Kennedy, he represents the best America has to offer."

10. Ms. Mahlangu is one of the bravest people to ever cross the WH threshold.....
More on her story...

Center press release - Magodonga Mahlangu and her organization, Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), are the 2009 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award winners. WOZA is a grassroots movement of over 60,000 Zimbabweans working throughout their country, empowering women from all walks of life to mobilize and take non-violent action against injustice. Ms. Mahlangu is a bold leader and a pioneer of the women's rights movement in Zimbabwe who has led WOZA's determined campaign of direct action. Tens of thousands of women have joined WOZA in standing up for human rights and speaking up about the worsening economic, social and political conditions in Zimbabwe. Since its founding in December 2002, WOZA has staged more than 100 non-violent marches in support of democratic reform and women's empowerment. The Government of Zimbabwe has jailed Ms. Mahlangu and thousands of WOZA supporters many times for their participation.

This ceremony is nothing short of amazing. I definately suggest that everyone watch it later on Youtube. Although, you may find yourself suddenly feeling very guilty for the fact that you're sitting in your chair. ;)
