Sarah Palin Did Couric Interviews Because She Felt Sorry For Katie
by Glynnis MacNicol | 8:17 am, November 13th, 2009

Add Drudge to the list of media outlets that has got its hands on Sarah Palin’s Going Rogue. The top story on the site today links directly through an excerpt of the book, posted by Drudge, that details Palin’s decision to do the now infamous Katie Couric interviews. Apparently Palin agreed to them because she felt sorry for Katie:

Nicolle went on to explain that Katie really needed a career boost. “She just has such low self-esteem,” Nicolle said. She added that Katie was going through a tough time. “She just feels she can’t trust anybody.”

I was thinking, And this has to do with John McCain’s campaign how?

Nicolle said. “She wants you to like her.”

Hearing all that, I almost started to feel sorry for her. Katie had tried to make a bold move from lively morning gal to serious anchor, but the new assignment wasn’t going very well.

Snap! The truth of the matter is that those Palin interviews did give Katie Couric a much-needed career boost, the fact they also almost entirely delegitimatized Palin as a viable candidate, and pulled the rug out from under the McCain-Palin campaign in the process isn’t addressed in the excerpt. What is addressed is that apparently other than scheduling Couric McCain’s staffers tried pretty hard to keep Palin under wraps where the media was concerned. Full excerpt below.

2. Katie Couric put a 5 foot marshmallow on a t-ball pedestal and moved the fences
in to just inches in front of the t-ball stand, to the point of a light breeze would cause the marshmallow to fall over the fence for a home run, and then gave Palin a corked bat and allowed her to push it with the bat ...

and Palin still struck out ...

12. Nice description and true - but that was why it was really devastating
Had it been a tough interview of the sort that happen most Sundays on one talk show or the other, where she needed to know details on foreign policy issues or complex economics, many would not have known how bad her answers really were - or not knowing the answers themselves, they might wonder if it was a "fair" test. (like many did when Bush did poorly in 2000 identifying the names of leaders - something Al Gore could have answered in his sleep)

16. +1!
I don't think it was a "softball" interview necessarily. But I do think it was run-of-the-mill and any national candidate should've been able to answer those questions easily.

34. She didn't put Palin's feet to the fire.
Of course, she didn't need to and that's probably why she pulled back a bit because she didn't want to look like she was piling on.

So, she essentially handed Palin the rope and Palin hanged herself.

6. It's because KKKate Couric knows she sold-out and deep down inside feels guilty about it.
Her husband died of colon cancer, yet she shills for the political party that wants to create more of the pollution that probably contributed to his cancer (and works for a company owned by a major polluter).

7. What? You needed MORE proof she (and they) live in a fantasy world?
I think this whole "they are out to stop right wing freedom of speech" narrative is where people who may be on the bubble will start to realize how deluded they are.

8. There are two reasons this book is at the top of the bestsellers list
1) Right wing nut but mega-money organizations are buying it up (like Newsmax giving it away for $5)

2) Everyone else that wants to see just how friggin' stupid this woman really is. It's a morbid curiosity. Kinda like the town folks who went to see the wreck of the Old 97

9. Hey, I'm no fan of Katie but this is pure patronizing bullshit.
Sarah Palin has to do SOMETHING to make herself look better in the context of that fiasco, so the professional solution she was handed by some expert is: Put yourself above, and Katie BELOW, you in the minds of the readers. Present her as a pathetic person you felt "sorry" for because she was having career trouble. That way, you can minimize and belittle the impact her interviews had on you.

It's so transparent. And such fail.

10. Very weird spin
The fact is that Palin did very few in depth interviews compared to other VP candidates. They were more newsworthy as they really really showed the truth - she was way over her head. The fact is Nicolle Wallace, who I remember from the 2004 campaign as a young, pretty Bush spokesperson in 2004, very likely thought that there was no one who would be easier then Couric.

The fact is that if you look back at Couric's questions, you would see that no serious politician would have had difficulties with them. I mean, how is what papers do you read a trick question? I remember many Democrats asked questions from her of the form Given(Republican POV), why do you say that (something they had said). Harder because they needed to attack the assumed information as well as explain their position - all before she took back the mic.

17. "no serious candidate"?!?! uh, how about
no serious adult.

I don't think there is a single person on DU who couldn't have come up with an answer to those questions.

To describe a questions such as "what newspapers and magazines do you read" as a "gotcha" question should freak out any halfway intelligent citizen. Who doesn't answer this all the time at dinner parties, dates, family gatherings? The fact that she didn't have an answer means that she wasn't reading anything besides a few clips of this and that that her staff laid in front of her.

20. I did say politician, but you are right that no serious person would have trouble with the answer
I think this does have a political element, as there could be political aspects to it. (That even exists for non-politicians, who might want their list to show that they read a variety of diverse, high quality papers.) But, in no way is it a gotcha question. Imagine how easily Obama, Kerry, either Clinton etc would have answered it. The point though is they never would have been asked - all of them have mentioned articles in various papers in off the cuff answers, so a subset of what they read is known.

I think it DID freak out most intelligent people.

14. Can you respect anyone who voted for Sara Palin to be Vice president?
I have absolutely no use for anyone who would elect someone who is so grossly incompetent that their election could actually jeopardize the nation. When someone would put their party above the welfare of citizens they have lost an respect that I may have had for them. I have acquaintances who are Republicans, but none that I would every consider to be a friend. The fact of the matter is that I have grown to vehemently despise Republican politicians. I tolerate Republicans that I am compelled to associate with only because I consider them to be brain washed ignoramuses that don't know better and trying to convince them that they are assisting in their own economic suicide would be a gross waste of time. These are the same people whose parents or grandparents lived through the Depression and didn't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. They gladly have taken advantage of the New Deal policies that their parents' never had and that allowed them to go to college, get well paying jobs, buy a home and enjoy a comfortable retirement. Many of the very people who are showing up a tea-bagging rallies sponsored by the health insurance and phama companies would be in desperate shape if it wasn't for Social Security and Medicare programs.

23. No. But I respect the hell out of the Republicans I know who switched their vote to Obama
BECAUSE of Palin instead of just sitting out the election. Said one, "I can't not cast a vote for President and even if I was sure McCain would live to be 100, there is no way I could vote for Sarah Palin."

I generally have to keep Republicans in the acquaintance category as well b/c I enjoy discussing politics too much to have it be a forbidden topic among my friends. :)

28. It is so obvious that Palin cannot process information in any coherent
manner that one can only assume that her supporters cannot process information either or want to use her candidacy for other motives that further their own interests and not that of the country.

Theme of her book - "It's not me it's them".

I wish people would quit giving a platform and I certainly hope Katie Couric ignores what's been said about her in the book.
