PPP Pollster: Massachusetts Senate Has ‘Become Losable’ for Democrats
Edited on Fri Jan-08-10 03:29 PM by WI_DEM
The pile up on how Coakley is running her campaign continues:

Public Policy Polling, conducting an automated poll on the Massachusetts Senate race, is finding good data for Republican candidate Scott Brown. According to PPP’s Tom Jensen, Democratic candidate Martha Coakley’s sleepy campaign–which is increasingly starting to irritate party strategists who trusted her to lock the race down early–has resulted in an electorate that’s more Republican than usual and more anti-health care reform than the state as a whole. Brown, one of the few Republicans of stature in the state, has a 60 percent favorable rating–a result of his own ads and of being basically ignored by Coakley. Writes Jensen:

This has become a losable race for Democrats- but it could also be easily winnable if Coakley gets her act together for the last week of the campaign. Complacency is the Democrats’ biggest enemy at this point and something that needs to be overcome to avoid a potential disaster.

1. Coakley is invisible
I haven't seen or heard a thing about her since the primary. She'd better get her ass in gear and quit thinking that just because it's MA she'll cruise to victory. Shit, this shouldn't even be close.

2. The GOP and media would take the loss of Kennedy's seat and run with it
and say that the Obama presidency is over.

20. We're not getting any here
but I'm in CT and the only MA station we get is NBC out of Springfield. I see a ton of ads for Brown on there, but it could be a regional thing with Coakley working in other areas.

As I said in another reply I always tend to get nervous as elections get closer and I'd hate to see this seat go to a puke more than any other if for nothing else than the fact that it's Ted Kennedy's seat.

12. She is not, in fact. I am in MA and, while she does not spend a lot of money on TV, she did many

events.

Yesterday, she had an event with Vicky Kennedy and Paul Kirk. She had ads on TV.

the only MA station we get is NBC out of Springfield so it could just be a regional thing. I've seen a pile of ads with Brown driving around in his old truck but nothing with Coakley.

I really doubt she'll lose this race and I always worry as we get close to an election. I would hate to see this seat more than any of them go to a teabagging puke.

I don't know anything about Ma. polotics but I know I don't want a Pub taking Teddy's seat!!!! I sent as much as I could.

5. I put up a thread about a week ago
discussing how the voters all over the place are pissed off. Some guy claimed he was from the same area as I and that I was just blowing smoke.

Folks are losing EVERYTHING and NOTHING is being done about it. To top it off they feel very alienated by the system on every level.

8. Is it just possible, the Democrats there are just as disillusioned
as some here at DU? She might just be running at a time
when it is difficult to excite people.

What happens in DC often reverberates...but rank and file
Democrats do not have the Media. They just quietly
go their way. Broken Promises.

11. Well, her opponent has been running positive ads and she has been strangely quiet
trying to coast to a win. If we had a better candidate I think things would be better. I think she will end up winning but we can't take anything for granted.

9. Seems to me that pollsters are trying to sell their work, but thanks for Jensen to confirm that she
is ahead (otherwise, he would say the opposite).

Also, if Jensen imagines that people in MA opposing the reform are all for Scott Brown, he is stupid. Many oppose this reform from the left and will never vote for him.

13. +9 on Rasmussen (more on private polls that are rumored around the state).

I dont mind that the pollsters hyperventilate to sell their work, but I wished that people stop getting sick on this.

it will be interesting to see what their numbers show.

18. We'll know this week-end. This is the poll your OP is referring to and

they say the race is "losable", (not tied, not close) which means she is ahead and I imagine more or less by the same margin.

Now, these polls may make Democrats go to vote and this would be a good thing. Other than that, I do not believe that there is any risk. This said, she is not a great candidate, but people react compared to the 30-40 % that Kennedy and Kerry usually had. She is a new candidate and will not win by that much.

I remember the same discussions going on on DU when Tsongas was candidate in a special election: same criticism about her campaign, her style. Same worries that the GOP would win. Turned out that she won by 7 points.

Coakley has proven during the primary that she has a good GOTV operation.

21. This is a joke. Brown has NO "stature" in this state - before this run
the only time I heard of him was when he swore in front of HS students at a student assembly.

http://www.bluemassgroup.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=6271

There are problems in MA, I won't dispute that but Coakley should still win this.

And I am inundated by Coakley ads, but maybe they are just playing during ch 5 local news?

working her ass off and taking NOTHING for granted.
