Prohibiting the sale of alcohol in Peru creates controversy

Living in Peru
Israel J. Ruiz

A can of worms was opened when Octavio Salazar, the general director of Peru's national police suggested on Thursday that the sale of alcohol be prohibited in Peru past 2 p.m.

While he was initially supported by the Andean country's Minister for Women and Social Development as well as the mayor of the Limean district of Surquillo, a good deal of controversy has been raised.

Marco Tulio Gutierrez, director of the Municipal Administration Institute (IPAM) assured that the social problems caused by the consumption of alcohol were a matter of education.

This problem cannot be solved by limiting the sale of this type of beverage at stores and supermarkets, said Tulio.

He explained the root of the problem lied in people's consumption habits and how they had been educated.
