Rivera seeks to restrict some Cubans from returning to Cuba
A congressman seeks to impose sanctions on Cubans if they return to the island within a few years after leaving.

By Juan O. Tamayo

U.S. Rep. David Rivera said Tuesday he wants to sanction Cuban Americans who return to the island less than five years after they left, alleging that they are abusing a loophole in the Cuban Adjustment Act and helping the country’s communist system.

The South Florida Republican submitted a bill on Aug. 1 to deal with the growing complaint that Cubans benefit from the CAA as refuge-seekers but then return to the island just to visit relatives or even to vacation.

Approved in 1966 for the tens of thousands of Cubans who were fleeing the communist government at the height of the Cold War, the CAA offers U.S. residency 366 days after arrival and other benefits. Citizens of no other country receive such benefits.

“The original intent of the CAA was to provide status to Cuban refugees because they were not able to return to Cuba,” Rivera told El Nuevo Herald. “That political situation remains the same today, with a communist totalitarian dictatorship in power.”

1. "A communist totalitarian dictatorship"?! Good grief! Can't we bomb them or something?
“'The original intent of the CAA was to provide status to Cuban refugees because they were not able to return to Cuba,' Rivera told El Nuevo Herald. 'That political situation remains the same today, with a communist totalitarian dictatorship in power.'” --from the OP

----------------------------

How 'bout we get together a crack CIA team and some Miami mafia thugs and INVADE, and the Cuban people, ravaged by this communist totalitarian dictatorship, will rise up, topple Fidel Castro's statue (he doesn't have one, but we'll erect one for the purpose) and strew flower petals in our path?!

And if they don't, how 'bout we blow a Cubana airliner out of the sky and kill their soccer team? That'll teach 'em to strew flower petals in our path when they're told!

How dare these people like their communist totalitarian dictatorship?! How can we tolerate this right off the coast of Florida--a fascist Diebold dictatorship!

Oh, wait, no, we can PROVE we were elected! The machines say so! See! Have a little faith in free enterprise! You a commie atheist or what? You think an American business on the taxpayer tit would cheat the consumer? Give 'em wrong results from their private, corporate-controlled 'TRADE SECRET' voting machines? No way! These machines tell the truth about who should rule America! That's all you need to know! And we ain't fascists! We're real Americans! We suck on the taxpayer tit, too! That's how we get "status" in lieu of returning to Cuba, where we can't wear gold chains and run gambling and prostitution enterprises, and can't buy the government to look the other way, and can't kill those who disagree! Do you believe in freedom or not, pinko! You prolly love Hugo, too, don't you? Another commie total dictator! We gotta get Diebold in there to find out who should rule Venezuela! Those poor Venezuelans, they need some good old-fashioned American enterprise, too! And if they don't like private corporate vote counting, nuke 'em! Worse thing that Mick ever did--bargaining with the Ruskie to get the missiles out of Cuba! Could've nuked 'em right then! How come they're just sittin' there, total commie dictators, not being nuked? Huh? Fifty years later and there they still are, putting millions in gulags, starving and torturing their people, throwing CIA agents in jail, GIVING people medical care--the best medical care in the world, FOR FREE! How can we permit that to happen right off the Florida coast? And, in conclusion, honored colleagues, fellow Diebold nobility, we can't let escaped Cubans back into that total commie dictatorship, until they've been here long enough to "get" greed, know what I mean? They need more than five years on the taxpayer tit to really understand that free, high quality medical care and a free education to the limit of their ability, is HORRIBLE! We can't risk them changing their minds! If they go back too soon, they might get swallowed up in the commie gulag and we lose a citizen of "status" in Miami, with money in his pocket that can be extorted to support our fascist causes! And, anyway, we've got Congress now, so why am I bothering to tell you all this! If you don't vote for my bill, we know where you live.

The Miami Hairball failed to report these additional remarks by U.S. Rep. David Rivera. But you can find them in the Congressional Record.

Not entirely :sarcasm:

2. The point should be to end the Cuban Adjustment Act, note that Rivera
doesn't want that because his crooked buddies would lose out. Instead they prefer to punish ordinary Cubans caught in the middle, par for the course!

It's really not fair that Cubans can get settled into the USA when others, like Haitians or Hondurans cannot.
