Michele Bachmann this week added foreign policy experience to her resume, filling a critical gap in the Minnesota congresswoman's background as she mulls a 2012 presidential bid.
On Friday afternoon, Bachmann, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, returned from a congressional delegation trip (or in military jargon, a "CODEL") to Colombia and Mexico.
Bachmann and four other lawmakers were updated on drug cartels and the security situation in the countries, according to the committee’s communications director Susan Phalen.
The group also met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and discussed the Colombia Free Trade Agreement. It was the House Intelligence Committee’s first CODEL of the new congressional session.
The Minnesota congresswoman was out of Washington all week on the previously undisclosed trip. Aides were unable to tell reporters the countries – or even the region of the world – that Bachmann would be visiting.
