Mudslide triggered by persistent rains kills 6 in Colombia

Published: May 31, 2008

BOGOTA, Colombia: Civil defense officials say a mudslide triggered by persistent rains has killed at least six people in northwestern Colombia.

National civil defense director Jaime Pineda says the deaths occurred around dawn Saturday in the city of Medellin, after tons of earth buried more than 30 homes.

Pineda says rescuers recovered the bodies of five adults and one child. At least 14 people are believed to be missing.

Colombian authorities blame persistent rains that began in March for at least 23 deaths and say 182,000 people have been rendered homeless.

Seven killed, 13 missing in Colombia landslide: officials

BOGOTA (AFP) - At least seven people were killed and 13 were missing on Saturday after a landslide crushed homes in a poor area of the Colombian city of Medellin, northwest of Bogota, civil defense officials said.

It appears the landslide was triggered by heavy rains that have battered Colombia since mid-April and left 11 people dead, according to the authorities.

Medellin, 450 kilometers (280 miles) northwest of Bogota, will host the 38th meeting of the Organization of American States starting on Sunday.
