Award for Cuban exile causes controversy at University of Miami
Award for Cuban exile causes controversy at University of Miami
By Frances Robles, The Miami Herald
11:02 a.m. EST, November 12, 2010

CORAL GABLES — Outrage over a plaque awarded to an aging exile militant at a University of Miami academic center has triggered protests from professors and accusations that the school's Cuba institute favors hard-line politics.

A local historical group recently used a hall at UM's Institute for Cuban and Cuban American Studies for an event commemorating 50 years of armed struggle in Cuba. The program culminated with the awarding of a plaque to Orlando Bosch.

A hero in the eyes of some in the Cuban community, Bosch, 84, was convicted of blasting a Bazooka off the MacArthur Causeway at a Polish freighter and was acquitted of a Cuban airline bombing that killed 73 people.

Academics from around the country -- and now also professors at UM -- have criticized the Oct. 12 event organized by the Institute of Cuban Historic Memory against Totalitarianism.

Orlando Bosch Ávila (b. 18 August 1926) is a Cuban exile criminal terrorist and former Central Intelligence Agency-backed operative, head of CORU organization, which the FBI has described as "an anti-Castro terrorist umbrella organization."<1> Former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh called Bosch an "unrepentant terrorist."<2> He has been accused of taking part in Operation Condor and several other terrorist attacks, including the October 6, 1976 bombing of a Cuban civilian airliner in which all 73 people on board were killed, including many young members of a Cuban fencing team and 5 North Koreans. The bombing is alleged to have been plotted at a 1976 meeting in Washington, D.C. attended by Bosch, Luis Posada Carriles, and DINA agent Michael Townley. At the same meeting, the assassination of Chilean former minister Orlando Letelier is alleged to have been plotted.

2. Wiki sucks on anything about Cuba or exiles.
I try to avoid Wiki on Cuba because it is constantly being edited by anti Cuba and anti Castro wingnuts.
