Costa Rican Supreme Court Temporarily Halts Entry of US Military

The Costa Rican Supreme Court last week agreed to take a case challenging the constitutionality of a US-Costa Rican agreement that would allow for a massive US military presence. The agreement cannot go into effect until the Supreme Court rules, thus postponing the arrival of US forces.

1. Good for the ticos

Was wondering if you can post this in LBN? Last week there was a longish thread in which some naysayers were saying this was all a hoax. One poster even said it was an "internet myth."

Don't know whether mods will accept NarcoNews, although I have found it to be excellent in relation to events in Latin America.

3. I saw that post.
Well, maybe in GD. The irony is Al is more accurate than the corporate media any day of the week.

6. Here's an article from the Costa Rica Examiner:
http://www.examiner.com/x-7756-Costa-Rica-Examiner~y2010m7d14-Is-the-US-Military-invading-Costa-Rica

Don't know anything about the source, but at least it's a view from Costa Rica, and not the US.

There's also a long, but interesting general article about Costa Rica and it's ties to the US here:

http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2019.htm

This article, I think, sheds light on some of the things Costa Rica has that the US covets, oil off the Atlantic coast, for one.

4. Great news, hope it will make an impact. There's a good idea at the bottom of the article:
NOTE: The Alliance for Global Justice is urging all people of goodwill to contact their member of Congress. Ask your member what justifies such a huge military presence in a country that has been demilitarized for over 60 years. Say that the size of the US military presence seems all out of proportion with the claim that it is to help Costa Rica interdict drug trafficking. Advise your member of Congress that at a time of record deficit spending and unemployment, the government should not be spending millions of taxpayer dollars further militarizing Latin America and contributing to rising tensions in the region. The Congressional Switchboard is 202-224-3121.

Recommending.
