Fourth earthquake of the day hits south of Chile
09:05, July 15, 2010

A strong earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Chile's southern region of Bio Bio on Wednesday, which was the fourth quake of the day. Yet there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the latest quake occurred at 11:05 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located some 104 kilometers northwest of Temuco, one of the most populated cities in Chile.

Chile's National Emergency Office has issued a tsunami alert to the regions of Bio Bio, La Araucania and Los Rios, but said there were no injuries or damage to basic services and infrastructure.

So far on Wednesday four earthquakes had been felt in the south of the country. The USGS reported that the first one of magnitude 5.3 took place at 4:21 a.m. local time, followed by another one of magnitude 6.5 only 11 minutes later. The third one happened at 8: 44 a.m. local time and was registered at a magnitude of 4.9.
