Hondurans cast absentee votes in Miami

Scores of Hondurans in Miami cast absentee ballots Sunday in the hopes that their votes would help resolve a worrisome political crisis in Honduras.

``It's time for Honduras to return to normalcy,'' Sylvia Martinez, 52, said as she stood at the front of the line.

The national vote on Sunday comes exactly five months after the military in Honduras toppled left-leaning President Manuel ``Mel'' Zelaya and a caretaker government swiftly seized power. World leaders condemned the coup, but exile activists in South Florida welcomed the shakeup, hailing it as a victory against the region's spread of populism.

The interest here in what's happening in Honduras was clear Sunday.

Before the poll opened at the Polish American Club of Miami at 7:30 am, some 75 voters had showed up. Supporters for the two main candidates handed out literature and led voters to sing the national anthem. Honduras' blue-and-white flag was on effusive display.
