3. Polls open in Honduras' disputed election

Polls open in Honduras' disputed election

Tegucigalpa - Polls opened Sunday in Honduras in a general election whose legitimacy was being called into question.

Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya had called upon his compatriots to boycott the vote, while others saw it as a chance for the troubled country to overcome the ongoing political crisis, exacerbated when Zelaya was toppled by a military coup on June 28.

Polls were set to close at 2200 GMT, with exit poll results to be made public shortly afterwards.

Porfirio Lobo of the National Party and Elvin Santos of the Liberal Party - to which both Zelaya and coup leader Roberto Micheletti belong - are the leading presidential candidates.

There are three other candidates on the ballot, while another, independent Carlos H Reyes, withdrew from the race to protest the failure to reinstate Zelaya.
