Informal sector increases to 44 percent in August (El Universal)
In the last twelve months, 172,695 people joined the informal sector

Economy
According to figures provided by the National Statistics Institute (INE), 5,254,393 people joined Venezuela's informal sector in August, which means that 44 percent of Venezuelan workers are part of this sector. The 0.8 percent increase, equivalent to 172,695 people, was strongly influenced in the last twelve months by the increase in the number of non-professionals who work on their own.

The INE said that in August 2008, non-professional people who were self-employed represented 28.8 percent of the population, but a year later the percentage rose to 30.4 percent. At the end of August 2009, 3,626,818 people were working on their own and belonged to the informal sector.

The increase in the informal sector begun with the fall of oil prices, which is the main source of revenues in Venezuela.
