Sekaggya to check Colombia rights record

UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders Margaret Sekaggya is in Colombia on a two-week visit.

According to a statement issued from Geneva, Sekaggya is scheduled to meet President Alvaro Uribe, his deputy, ministers and security chiefs.

Last week, Uribe cleared a major hurdle to serving a third term after legislators approved holding a referendum on whether he could run again.

The move, however, must first be endorsed by the constitutional court.
Sekaggya, a former head of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, will meet representatives of civil society, the UN and diplomatic delegations.

She will also visit authorities in Bogotá, Barranquilla, Medellín, Cali and Arauca. Sekaggya is expected to present her preliminary findings in Bagota on September 18.
