VIDEO: SHOOTING AND BEATING OF SOCCER FANS IN TEGU
So much for the Honduran police trying to distinguish themselves from the murdering Honduran military. At first, the police appear to be shooting in the air and then, unmistakeably, they begin shooting at crowd level, especially one cop shooting from around the side of the building. It's only 2:17 minutes long and it gets much worse as it goes on.

1. This was discussed early this morning on Radio Globo

The commentators said that disturbances between fan bases (barras) after futbol games are frequent and hardly unusual (and not only in Honduras, but around the world) but it is rare for police to shoot and kill fans.

The commentators tied the two deaths and more than a half-dozen wounded and beaten fans directly to the golpe de estado, which has skyrocketed the level of civil tensions in general around the country.

In the video you can see that it is not one group of fans throwing rocks at the opposing team's fans, but at the police.

(Btw, the match between Tegu's two main rivals ended in a nil-nil draw.)

Oh, the Costa Rica Football Federation today asked FIFA to move a World Cup qualifying match set for two weeks from now in Tegucigalpa to a third-country site because of the climate generated by the golpe in Honduras.

2. Earlier I posted an update from El Frente Nacional Contra El Golpe
and they said they were able to confirm that the yelling of "golpistas" by the fans at the police elicited this ultra-violent and deadly response.

3. As a sidebar, the golpistas pulled off the impossible

they united the fan bases of traditional rival futbol teams Olimpia and Motagua against the gorilettis.

Would have been unthinkable just a month ago !!

4. How the pro-golpista newspaper La Prensa of San Pedro Sula reported the incident

Once more vandalism has sullied football. This time it occurred in the game between Olimpia and Motagua that tied 0-0. At the end of the match, the two barras (fan bases) faced off with gunfire, causing the death of two persons and more than 15 wounded.

6. Thanks for the video. Very sad seeing people abuse ordinary citizens.
Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 03:27 AM by Judi Lynn
It's a sad, sad situation when a ruling class can insure there are so many poor people that they can always expect to find many poor young men, women who will shoot, or beat their fellow citizens simply because they need a job so badly.
