Nat'l. Comm. to Free Cuban Five Bulletin: Supreme Court Decision Expected June 15
National Committee To Free the Cuban Five Bulletin

Supreme Court Decision Expected
on Hearing for the Cuban Five
Supreme Court
Dear Friends,

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision on June 15 on whether or not they will hear the appeal of the Cuban Five. This week, the Obama Administration filed a brief urging the Court to deny the Five a hearing. The next day, the Five's attorneys filed their response (both legal briefs are on our website at the links below).

It is important that we not passively await the decision. Instead, it is urgent that supporters once again raise a worldwide cry for the immediate freedom of the Five.

Attorneys for the Five make the worldwide significance of this case clear in their reply:

This is a signal case in the international community regarding our nation's commitment to the principle of due process. The petition seeks review of an en banc ruling upholding the only U.S. trial ever condemned by the U.N. Human Rights Commission. The government ignores completely the thirteen amicus briefs, apparently more than have ever before been submitted in a criminal case. Given the worldwide attention placed uniquely upon this case, the petition presents "important question of law that . . . should be[] settled by this Court."

The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five will be organizing actions in the United States 1) on the days before the decision; 2) on the day of the expected decision (June 15); and 3) on the following day. We urge supporters around the world to take actions of all kinds, whatever is possible. Protesting at consulates and embassies, calling press conferences, writing letters to newspapers or to the President or Justice Department (do not write to the Supreme Court), anything to ensure that the U.S. government knows that the whole world is watching. In the actions you carry out, reaching out to new audiences, to the public, and to the media is especially important.

Please keep us informed of your plans, and send reports and pictures as soon as events occur, so we can make sure that the worldwide response is properly featured in press coverage of the ruling. And be sure and send us the signed petitions you are collecting (click the link below to download petitions).
