DOD honors Americans held 5 1/2 years in Colombia
The Associated Press

MIAMI -- ... Keith Stansell, Marc Gonsalves and Thomas Howes will receive the Defense of Freedom Medal at a ceremony Thursday in Miami.

Stansell, Gonsalves and Howes are being honored for the injuries they suffered during 5 1/2 years of captivity.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, took them hostage when their surveillance plane crash-landed in rebel territory in 2003. They were rescued July 2.

The medal is the civilian equivalent of the Purple Heart. The Defense Department created it after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to honor contractors or employees injured or killed while working for the DOD.
