WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden will address a Munich security conference next week in his first trip abroad in his new job, the White House said on Tuesday amid a push to build support for an expanded role in Afghanistan.
Biden will travel to the 45th Munich Conference on Security Policy in Germany with General James Jones, assistant to the president for National Security Affairs, the White House said.
The visit comes as the new U.S. administration of President Barack Obama attempts to gather support for a more comprehensive strategy in Afghanistan.
Obama discussed Afghanistan by phone on Monday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Sarkozy and Merkel will attend the Munich security conference, the organization's website said. Afghan President Hamid Karzai also was expected to participate, it said.
The conference is an annual gathering of government officials and foreign and defense policy experts to discuss trans-Atlantic security issues, the White House said.
Obama has pledged to make Afghanistan a cornerstone of his security policy, beefing up the U.S. troop presence there while reducing U.S. forces in Iraq. (Editing by Bill Trott)
