I can't believe how stupid people are....
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 08:24 PM by 1corona4u
Just back from a Labor Day dinner, and I am so upset,, and annoyed. There were 9 adults there. Here is the breakdown on the people, and their status;

Myself, 50 yr. old, Ind.--Obama
My best friend; 42, Ind.--Obama
Her boyfriend; 42, R/I?----?? Not sure.
His mom; 50-something, ??--Obama
Her friend from Michigan; 50-something, single woman, R--McAsshat
My friend's uncle; 72,(today--you'd never know it!!)R--Obama
His son; 40-something, Dem.--Obama
Neighborhood couple; 45-50 STAUNCH republicans!!--McAsshat

Now, after dinner, we were sitting around, watching the TV about the hurricane, and the forcaster was talking about the waves rolling off of Africa, so the man from the couple says; "I don't like anything coming from Africa". I knew right there that he was not going to vote for Obama, and that he meant it in a racist way.

I was showing--I'll call them Uncle and Cuz, boyfriendas mom, and my friend, the videos of Jon Stweart, and Stephen Colbert, on Palin. We were rolling, and there was a dead silence from the couple and that single woman.

A while later the men went outside and I was left with the women, so I took the opening. I said that I had become convinced that Obama was the best thing for our country, and that I thought McAss was bat-shit crazy, and that I did not want another 4 years of him. The 2 women started DEFENDING Bush, and McAsshat, to the point that I thought they were not even on the same planet as I am.

One of them actually said that THIS economy is Bill CLINTON'S fault!!! Can you believe that?!? They also said that they think that Obama is going to give "special treatment" to blacks. I said, I disagree, because all week long at the convention, all you heard was; work hard, work hard, work hard...and said that I don't think anyone is going to get a handout. I also said that they needed to keep in mind that Obama was 1/2 white, to which they replied that he denounced that and chose to consider himself a black man. They then went on to bring up the Rev. Wright thing. They said that he did not have the qualifications to be prez!?! Like Bush ever did?!?

I finally had to give up, because they were relentless, and the single woman said she would think of me on election night. I told her that she needed to be thinking about HER choice on election night, as it could have very profound consequences.

I am posting this here, but I am thinking there is still a lor more work to do and people to talk to before this election, because this is the kind of thing that may just ruin any chance for us being able to get this country back on track.

If you look at the stat; 5 for Obama, and 4 for McAsshat, and 1 undecided, it really shows the reason Obama is not pulling way out in front of McAsshat.

I can't believe people would just stand behind THEIR party, when it has been such an epic failure.

I am totally dejected.

1. When I come up against people like that -- there is NOTHING I can say
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 08:49 PM by gateley
to change their minds. They're beyond reasoning and I just get MYSELF upset.

Here's a story I posted today about a friend of mine who brought up Obama yesterday. Different situation/mind set than the people you had to deal with, but I was pleased at the result.

I was with my very non-political friend who is pretty much a racist (though she doesn't see that in herself).

She said she could NEVER vote for Obama, although she's a life-long Democrat. She asked, "are you REALLY going to vote for HIM?" I asked if she was going to vote for McCain, and she said Yep!

So, realizing I couldn't change her deep seated attitudes, I moved it away from the individual candidates and onto why I am terrified that if the Republicans remain in office, our country will continue to be devastated.

I said that since no one person actually makes all the decisions and sets the policies, that I had gone straight to voting records and tracking records of how much we have suffered under this administration. Covered the usual points, the senseless war in Iraq, that we began with a budget surplus and now have a several trillion dollar deficit, the number of jobs that have gone overseas, the number of companies and banks failing, the mortgage crisis, gas prices, etc.

I was calm and factual, no personal attacks on McCain and instead of referring to Obama or McCain, I would refer to the Democrats and Republicans. Although I did say that I felt McCain's choice of running mate was worrisome should something happen to McCain while in office, and contrasted Palin to Biden.

She was nodding along in agreement, and at the end I just made a plea that if she couldn't vote for the Democratic ticket, to please either refrain from voting or write in someone she would prefer. I asked her to please not be a part of potential continuing devastation as we watch our country and see everything we believed in and stood for disintegrate.

She said - you're right. It's more than one person -- I'll probably have to hold my nose, but I'll vote Democrat.

Whew!

EDIT to give you a hug. I understand how frustrating and surreal it is to listen to such inflexible, non-thinking people.

2. And I just got into it with my husband -
He accused the Dems for Palin's problems.
Yep, it's all our fault that McCain didn't vette her.

WTF is wrong with these people?

I've come to the conclusion that repugs don't have the ability to reason.

ehhh- you guys are my salvation right now :)

4. I know, it's totally dejecting....
I really don't know if I could even live with a republican now, let alone marry one. My parents were both republicans, and I really never paid any attention to them, but now I see why they were like they were.

7. My republican husband said re: Palin
"Well at least she has executive experience....Biden, Obama and McCain are legislators. They should have either CEO or Executive branch experience."

Um, ok sweetheart

9. I'm not the only one?
I try to think about Carville/Matalin; Ahnold and Maria....

That must be the newest talking point. Some woman on CNN was saying the same thing about exec experience, and DUer medicswife posted that someone said that on BBC news.

One thing I will say about Repugs - they sure have their act together when it comes to elections.
Dems just never learn.

One could argue HE should have vetted ME

19. I don't know how this happened.
I was always a Democrat, always interested in politics...but never obsessed, like I am now.

Well, we've been married 27 years...so I guess opposites do attract.

24. Listen..
I know what you are going through. My husband and I are both Democrats, but my oldest daughter, raised in a family of Democrats and my husband's brother have somehow lost their way and the repubs found them. Family gatherings are not much fun anymore. My husband and his brother get very heated. My daughter just says that she loves me anyway and I say back at ya, darling.

25. Oh, how sad!
Maybe she's just lost and eventually will find her way. I've seen my own kids pull away from me over certain things, but eventually they start to come back. They never moved to the right-wing side though, just questioned some of my more liberal tendencies.

6. Fear
"Giving special treatment to blacks" comment...Yeah like that "special treatment" they all received post-Katrina :eyes: Not to mention the "special treatment" they receive Driving While Black....PLEASE.

It's fear that motivates people who vote like that. Fear of the unknown. We're in unchartered territory, and they'd rather stick with what they know, even if they know it's killing them.

10. I know....
it just pisses me off, that with the shape we're in, they can't just put their fears aside, or reconcile them, for the good of the rest of the country. I doubt they will ever give it up, but jesus, just give the guy a chance.

I hope Obama wins big. I really do. I can't wait to tell those fuckers; I told you so.(meaning he will be a great president)

12. That is frightening
There really are some people who shouldn't vote, as they are so ill-informed. One can only hope they'll stay home on election day, as they aren't going to change their minds.

I understand you feeling dejected. The ignorance in this country is appalling.

15. Are you all in a red state or a blue state?
When I get frustrated with my relatives, I just remember that I'm in a blue state, as are all my repub relatives. So their votes won't do any harm. ;)

Some Republicans are so used to not thinking rationally and making decisions with their reptilian brains that they're useless.

My mom (okay she's 78, but...) votes based on whether the candidate seems nice, if she likes their haircut, or their spouse, or some other lame reason! How do you talk to someone like that! She also uses abortion as a litmus test.

23. The abortion single issue voters blow my mind.
The number of abortions went down with Clinton in office & up with boosh. If they were truly against abortion, they would vote for the party that walks the walk & actually decreases the number of abortions, not the party that just talks the talk.
