Does anyone know if Old/ Antique China is selling well?

Anyone have experience with "Replacements" in buying any of your old or antique china? I have pieces and a set of China that no one in the family wants and I can't use it and don't know what to do with them. Also have milkglass dishware and some other things that are newer stoneware made by Pfalzgraf.

1. I got a free quote from "Replacements" as to how much they would pay...

and I felt it wasn't enough to warrant my time boxing it all up and shipping it.... YMMV! :)

2. Your best bet is to sell them on eBay.

Or a place like it. Replacements does not pay that well. I have bought pieces from them and on eBay and the prices are similar. I added to an old set my grandmother left me and paid a pretty penny through eBay, though it was well worth it.

You could go to replacements and eBay and check the prices and then decide if you want to deal with the eBay stuff or not.

Just as an aside I paid $295.00 (actually my husband bought it for me as a gift)just for a coffee pot that matched the service from an eBay seller, so you may want to see what you could do on your own as a seller there.

3. Best thing to do if choosing to sell on eBay...

Do searches on those particular pieces/maker/mark, etc. to see if those are selling well. Also do a basic subject line search, such as just the maker's mark name, and checkmark the Completed Listings to see what has or has not sold within the last 30 days.

If you tell me what your marks are, etc., I can send you links for look up, and/or check to see if they are in one of my books.

4. I sold my wedding china to Replacements

It was Wedgwood. I described what I had, and they bought it. I mailed it, and got a check in return. Very easy.

5. I used to work there. Success in selling your stuff depends on what

they can sell.

If they have customers for that particular pattern and the pieces that you have, their customers are hot for (active clients), then you can make some money. If they have stacks and stacks of the pattern and no huge active client list, then you might not make much.

Also, it makes a huge difference what shape your stuff is in. No chips. No cracks. No crazing.

Identification: If your stuff can't be positively identified (by manufacturer/pattern) or if they don't have any active clients for it, then the only place they can sell it is in the Showroom (where it might sell tomorrow or it might sit in the case for 5 years) at (usually) a pretty low price.

Remember, with Replacements, they don't really deal in what your stuff is "worth". They aren't licensed appraisers. They can only sell it if they have clients who are hot to buy it. They have to make a profit--and be able to sell to their customers at a price less than "book" or "suggested retail". That's their selling point--bulk inventory at less than suggested retail.

6. Hi!

How fun. May I ask you a question? Is there any way to get rid of crazing? I have some really, really old china. The crazy shows up really bad when I put hot food on it. I can't see the crazing when the plates are cold, just hot.

7. When I was there, they were experimenting with re-firing crazed plates

and were successful at it. At that time though, they did not repair china for customers.

I think they've changed that policy and offer a repair service.

Go to their website or better yet call them and ask.

Their telephone operators (either customer service or regular sales) should be able to help you promptly.

I actually found my china on replacements (after searching for forever). No one could identify it until I took it to Antiques Roadshow. I had done some initial searching, but couldn't find the 'mark' in any book. Guy found it right off the bat (after I gave him the only small clue I had).

I used to sell antiques, and someone once mentioned to me that soaking the plates in milk helped the crazing. I haven't tried it myself, but you could try it; nothing to lose, huh? :hi:

ps. I think you'd get a better result the longer you let it set in the milk bath.

they happen to be a local company in Houston, TX, but they have a huge inventory of both china and crystal. I sold several sets of china through them and got great prices for my stuff. Give them a try... :hi:
