Volume 15, Number 9
April 1, 2011
Ron McCoy, editor

"The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364
days of the year." --Mark Twain

Well, it's April Fools' Day, one of the most light hearted days of the
year. Have fun today because in just eighteen days your income taxes are
due. No foolin’! It's no wonder that, for the 19th consecutive year, the
Health Resource Network has designated April as Stress Awareness Month.
:-)

MAYDAY! Due to an upcoming travel opportunity for us, there will be no
newsletter in May. The next issue will drop into your inbox on June 1.

We hope you continue to enjoy our free monthly newsletter covering the
latest antique/collectible news, trends, interesting tidbits and
spotlights of interesting websites, particularly unusual corners of the
collecting and pop culture world. If so, please forward it to someone
and suggest they subscribe.

E-MAIL CHANGES? Do you have a new e-mail address? Let us know so you
don't miss a single issue of our free newsletter. It's easy. Update your
subscription e-mail address now by sending us an email
, listing your OLD address and NEW address. And,
as a reminder, to ensure delivery directly to your inbox (so it's not
sent to a junk folder), please add ron@collectingbuzz.com to your
address book or safe sender list.

DRESSED TO THE NINES
http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dressed_to_the_nines/introduction.htm

The first official baseball uniform, adopted in 1849 by the
Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York City, was a simple outfit
consisting of a white flannel shirt, blue wool pants and a straw hat. At
this site, the Baseball Hall of Fame's Dressed To The Nines, you'll find
a timeline of significant moments in the history of the baseball
uniform, info about different parts of the uniform and images of every
major league uniform worn since 1900.

DISCOVER THE MASTERS
http://www.googleartproject.com
Seeing paintings in person is amazing. You get to move around the
painting and examine close-up detail. Google brings that experience
online with Art Project. You can virtually move around museums and see
famous paintings by the Masters in incredibly high resolution.

With the Easter holiday approaching, our friend Barb Crews takes a look
at collecting Easter rabbits and Easter eggs including paper-mache,
chalkware, postcards, plastic, toys and others.

MASTER BLACKSMITH
http://vimeo.com/16449034

Few blacksmiths these days rely entirely on traditional techniques and
many use machines to help them out. But mastering the art remains as
tough as ever. Listen to this master blacksmith discuss what it takes to
be successful at the trade.

MANTIQUES

Man + Antique = Mantique

Mantiques is the relatively new term referring to the latest generation
of antiques and collectibles shows on TV. Pawn Stars, American Pickers,
Auctions Kings, Storage Wars, American Treasures and others have a more
manly appeal with their plethora of macho merchandise including military
collectibles, muscle cars, old fishing rods & lures, old tools,
breweriana, antique weapons, pin-up calendars, car parts and the like.
We wonder if more men are joining their wives or girlfriends in scouting
yard sales and flea markets. Will the "pretties" -- glassware, pottery,
vintage clothing, doilies -- decrease in value while the manly stuff
increases? Is this sparking a new interest in antiques and collectibles?
The Chicago Tribune looks at TV's macho hunters and gatherers at the
above link.

ROYAL WEDDING STAMPS GO ON SALE
http://www.royalmail.com

Britain's Royal Mail is celebrating Prince William and Kate Middleton's
wedding with a new set of stamps that feature their official engagement
portraits. Two pictures of the couple taken by fashion and celebrity
photographer Mario Testino will be printed on the set of commemorative
stamps, which can be ordered beginning April 7. The collectibles have
been approved by William and will be released on April 21, the birthday
of Queen Elizabeth II.

QUIRKY ROYAL WEDDING MEMORABILIA
http://tinyurl.com/QuirkyMemorabilia

Wedding collectibles and memorabilia abound across the pond as well as
in the U.S. Along with traditional and expected commemorative items
offered for the forthcoming wedding of Prince William & Catherine
Middleton on April 29 at Westminster Abbey, the royal wedding
memorabilia and collectibles market has been getting increasingly
bizarre. Here are some items we've seen recently: ‘Kate & Wills’ meat
pie, pet t-shirt, pointy-headed garden ornaments, tea bag holders, I-Pad
covers, crown jewel condoms, paper dolls, Kiss Me Kate Beer and, for
those who are already sick and tired of everything royal wedding
related, how about "Throne Up" -- a paper sick bag! One of the most
novel products spotted is the royal wedding special-edition GE
American-style refrigerator emblazoned with a huge image of Prince
William and Kate Middleton on its door.

FINAL AUCTION: ROY ROGERS MUSEUM
http://www.burleyauction.com/

The final items from the Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Museum liquidation go
on the auction block in New Braunfels, Texas on April 9. The museum,
first in Victorville, California, and later in Branson, Missouri, became
the archive of their impressive collection which spanned a fifty-year
Hollywood career and marriage to each other. Items featured in the sale
include a life-sized carved marble statue of the legendary couple, his
black Bohlin Resistol hat, pair of custom-made Double Eagle cowboy
boots, pair of overlaid silver-engraved spurs, and Bianchi double gun
rig adorned with gold and silver.

ANGEL OVERLOAD

An Oklahoma woman hopes to find a good home for her collection of
several hundred angels which she has amassed over 30 years of
collecting. She wants to donate them to someone or some place who will
display them properly. Anyone seriously interested in obtaining the
collection can contact: rick.wells@newson6.net

1. Re papier mache eggs. A few weeks ago I spotted a couple
at my favorite thrift store. I quickly grabbed them, opened them up to verify they were German, and wouldn't you guess - "Made In China." AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!
