TTC unveils system-wide arrivals system

Gilbert Ndikubwayezu
Staff Reporter

The Next Vehicle Information system, displayed here on an electronic screen at Spadina station, is being extended to buses.

Streetcar users aren’t the only privileged commuters anymore. As of this week, Toronto bus riders can plan their trips with the help of the Next Vehicle Arrival System.

All 9,300 TTC bus stops in Toronto, plus some 800 others within the GTA, now have digital numbers (listed on the TTC website) that allow riders to check the time of the next bus’s arrival by sending a cellphone text message to 898882.

Within seconds, the user gets a message back offering arrival times for up to the next six buses at that stop.

A Star test on the system Monday in northeast and downtown Toronto revealed that the system was relatively accurate, with the buses arriving on time or within one or two minutes after the advertised time. This was tested on the 53 Steeles bus at Don Mills Rd., on the 25 Don Mills bus southbound at McNicoll, on the 34 Eglinton East bus at Don Mills intersection and on the 97 Yonge bus at Front St. ................(more)
