European transit statistics?
The National Transit Database has detailed statistics for American transit systems at http://www.ntdprogram.com/ntdprogram/pubs/profiles/2004/2004-All-Complete.pdf

Does anyone know of a similar source for European systems? I am trying to determine the level of government funding that bus systems get in Europe, and the effect on ridership etc. More specifically, I am trying to do a detailed comparison of my home town (Columbia, SC) and the similar-sized (in terms of both area and population) city of Toulon in France, which has a seemingly much better transportation system.

3. It's a HUGH file
Apologies for the Freeperspeak, but the PDF is 585 pages long and takes an eternity to download, even with a high-speed connection. Whether it's worth it depends on how badly you want the information.

4. Got it
It is a huge file but it is jam-packed full of fascinating data that will keep the true transportation geek immersed for days.

2. I found the Toulon web site
and I found the page about area transport. Seems they are especially proud of the bus and ferry system. I also found what appears to be their uban planning website up to 2015.

But I didn't find anything that says... in 2006 we spent 30 mil euros on the transit system...

I'm sure they get some money from the French federal gov't thought.

5. Found it on the transit system's own website
I had to use Babelfish to translate (my 2 years of middle school French were a long time ago), but the information was on there.

6. Check out the UITP
The International Association of Public Transport is a world-wide association of PT providers based in Europe. They have a Transport Economics Commission which focuses on transit financing that may gave data resources available to the public.

7. They charge an arm and a leg for statistics

And there's no guarantee of getting the figure I want. I have found a figure on their website for investment from the metropolitan council that covers the Toulon area, but not how much they get from the federal or regional government, or from the 0.7% payroll tax that I believe is used to fund transit systems in France.
