Many debate giving morning-after pill to victims of rape
Wednesday, June 20, 2007

By Tracie Mauriello, Post-Gazette Harrisburg Bureau

HARRISBURG -- Catholic physicians, clergy and health association administrators sounded off yesterday on a plan to require all hospitals to offer emergency contraception to rape victims.

They spoke against the bill during a public hearing of the House Republican Policy Committee.

Proponents say the bill protects women at their most vulnerable.

Some foes, such as physician and psychiatrist Karl Benzio, of the Christian Medical and Dental Association, oppose the use of the so-called morning-after pill in any circumstance.

Ann Marie Manning, head of the obstetrics and gynecology department at Holy Spirit Hospital in suburban Harrisburg, said use of the pill, also known as Plan B, is appropriate to prevent conception if it has not yet occurred, but not to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.

1. this shit drives me nuts
First off, Farl can shove his opinion where the sun don't shine since he'll never actually be pregnant.

Second off, someone tell Ann Marie that she's really splitting hairs. Is there even any way to tell that early on if conception has occurred or not? And even if there is...what the fuck business is it of hers whether the woman in question does about it anyway?

I'm sorry for the profanity. Ok, no I'm not. I'm really sick of this shit. I'm sick of my body belonging to everyone on earth but me.

2. Any doctor who denies emergency contraception should be forced to take
responsiblity of any child that may result from that denial. Karl Benzio should lose his medical license. Off topic, why do dentists need a religious association? What pressing philosophical dilemmas could possibly arise during a root canal?

5. .......!

Honestly, I don't understand the need for a religious organization around a profession on any level. I would think there are times that religion is going to come into conflict of one's chosen profession and vice versa. Seems to me just another way to avoid responsibility and make excuses for not doing a job, you signed up for. :eyes:

4. Disgusting, vile and beyond belief.
WHY the debate? I'm not getting it. This from the church that condemned unbaptized babies to Limbo until a few months ago. The hypocrisy is stunning.

Thank God for radical, left wing Catholics I guess, because the conservative bent the Catholic church has effects millions all over the world. I'm thinking in particular the South American countries like Chili, although horror stories exist all over the world and happen every day. According to Wikipedia, abortion is illegal in Vatican city under any circumstances.
