co supreme court approves language of anti-abortion ballot proposal
Edited on Tue Nov-13-07 10:33 PM by kagehime
DENVER (AP) - The Colorado Supreme Court cleared the way Tuesday for an anti-abortion group to collect signatures for a ballot measure that would define a fertilized egg as a person.

The court approved the language of the proposal, rejecting a challenge from abortion-rights supporters who argued it was misleading and dealt with more than one subject in violation of the state constitution.

If approved by voters, the measure would give fertilized eggs the state constitutional protections of inalienable rights, justice and due process.

"Proponents of this initiative have publicly stated that the goal is to make all abortion illegal - but nothing in the language of the initiative or its title even mentions abortion," Kathryn Wittneben of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado said in a statement. "If that's not misleading, I don't know what is."

proponents say this has nothing to do with outlawing abortion, but i call bullshit on that argument. you define a fertilized egg as a person, it then gets all the legal rights as you or i.

furthermore, i fear measures like this will decrease the number of birth control options women have. some methods of birth control, such as progestin-based methods or the iud, can prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus.

i still don't understand why, rather than trying to outlaw abortion, the pro-fetus brigade doesn't advocate for better education and better access to birth control.

those assholes will get my iud when they pry it from my cold, dead uterus. scary thing is, i'm sure they'd want to.

1. This development is quite horrifying.
But the GD thread is good (so far). Cerridwen's funny about creating 100,000 dependants is hilarious (in a frightening way, of course).

because they're fucking batshit crazy. Their movement has nothing to do with saving "babies, if it did they'd be fighting first and foremost for high quality, govt. funded pre-natal care for all pregnant women. The movement is all about control and imposing their fucked up world view on the rest of us. Have I mentioned yet today how much I hate these people? :banghead:

3. Agreed, and it can't be posted enough: they are about controlling sex and women's sex organs, NOT

pregnancy. They don't give a rat's ass what happens to a woman's life and health once she actually IS pregnant, or the goddamned baby they claim to care so much about.

4. And how many of them have adopted the resulting babies?
A few have I'm sure but not as many as those spouting off about the sacredness of zygotes.

6. What frightens me about this
is - if the fetus is a person at conception, then will they hold coronor's inquests for miscarriages?

Will women be found guilty of murder because they had a miscarriage?

The only birth control these folks will advocate is condoms, because the men control use of those.

Our country has gotten very, very sick.
