ABC: Gore would have voted ''NO" On War Funding Bill
Gore Against Funding U.S. Troops Without Timetable for Withdrawal
May 29, 2007 9:39 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis and A'Melody Lee Report: Former Vice President Al Gore tells ABC News that if he were still in the United States Senate, he would have voted "no" on a war funding bill without a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq which passed both house of Congress last week and was signed into law by President Bush.

Gore staked out his position for ABC News after speaking about his new book, "The Assault on Reason," at The George Washington University on Tuesday evening.

While Gore’s position puts him out of step with 80 of 100 United senators, it puts him in line with votes cast last week by Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn. -- three sitting senators actively seeking the Democratic Party’s 2008 presidential nomination. Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is alone among the Democratic senators seeking the White House in 2008 who voted "yes" on the bill which would fund U.S. troops without a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal.

Gore, who opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2002, argues in "The Assault on Reason" that the "degradation of the public sphere" gave rise to an unnecessary war which he dubbed "a big mistake" on Tuesday.

1. Well surprise me NOT
of course Al Gore would have voted no, but then when was the last time he ran for the Senate? Seems ABC is trying to create a distraction from the fact that the WH planned to create what would have been a well covered shortage in Iraq. What ABC did not say was that if Al had been president the whole Iraq mess would not exist, which would be more to the point.

2. Easy to say that when you're not in office
I believe that Al would've voted no, but it is also easy for someone to say how he would've voted on a particular piece of legislation when he's not in office.

3. Um, no, not so much. Any Democrat who opposes funding the war
in any way, elected official or not, is taking a major risk. Anyone who opposes any part of the Rovian version of "supporting the troops" is. Al Gore was brave to issue a statement, as all vocal opponents of the war are brave to voice their objections.

6. His voice is definitely welcome
In office or not, we need every voice possible to denounce this war.

5. On "Larry King Live"
the night of the vote he supported the Democratic leadership. I was a little surprised when he would not say he would have voted no. I guess he has had time to do some re-thinking on the matter.

7. Good. They're paying attention to what Gore thinks
Seen any articles on what Mr. Newt thinks? Thomson? Hunter?

I'd say this bodes well.
