If he hasn't I'm still on board. Cleland has always been the face of the anti war movement.

4. I'm saying if we have to worship a personality to be in the anti-war club,
it's going to be Cleland. He has the most credibility of any of the high profile activists, being seriously wounded in a useless war and knowing all about what it takes to advance a cause in politics with realities like red states whose democratic senators are up for reelection.

9. Losing an arm and leg is no where close to losing a life (son)

He still has life and a voice which is great but to say he is the only one credible is a bit over the top IMO There is nothing like the loss of a son or parent. Nothing..I would bet any amount of money Cindy would give up both her arms and her legs to get Casey back..in a heartbeat..

2. Cleland the face of the anti-war movement?

Just goes to show there are a million perceptions in the world.

8. My recollection (I voted for him in 2002) is that he did not speak out until he lost reelection
to the dreadful Saxby Chambliss, whom is now thought to be vulnerable in 2008.

11. Zell Miller, the anti-dem Democrat, helped him lose. Also I think that Cleland
believed that his votes with Bush would earn him something from Bush. They didn't. Georgia is not as "red" as people think. Its Democratic party had been in disarray for a long time until recently.

6. I disagree with the "cult of personality" statement
I think it shifts the focus from where it belongs.

I think "we" are guilty of the deification of many of these figures. We hold them up as more than mere mortals and NO ONE can live up to those kinds of expectations ... "we" are then disheartened and disillusioned with the object of our affections when they invariable fail to live up to OUR expectations.

We see it here all the time.
