By all accounts, Kneeland Youngblood is one of the nation's most prominent black businessmen.

The 51-year-old Dallas private equity executive and former emergency physician serves on the boards of directors of The Gap, Burger King and Starwood Hotels and Resorts. He has degrees from Princeton University and UT Southwestern Medical Center. In October, Black Enterprise magazine named him one of the "75 Most Powerful African Americans on Wall Street."

r. Youngblood would be the club's first black member. But his application, now in its sixth year, has hit a snag over questions about his involvement with the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, say a country club member with personal knowledge of the concerns and others close to key members of the longtime Dallas institution. To some of Mr. Youngblood's friends, it's a sign that race may still be too much of a factor in club applications.

In 2001, The Dallas Morning News found that none of the city's four most expensive country clubs had black members. Six years later, both the Dallas Country Club and the Brook Hollow Golf Club still have no black members, according to representatives from the clubs. The Preston Trail Golf Club has at least one black member, but officials there declined to say how many. Representatives from the Northwood Club did not provide an answer.
