Dear Democratic Congress, by Cindy Sheehan
from a bulletin that went out from Cindy this morning.

May 26, 2007
Dublin, Ireland

Dear Democratic Congress,

Hello, my name is Cindy Sheehan and my son Casey Sheehan was killed on April 04, 2004 in Sadr City , Baghdad , Iraq . He was killed when the Republicans still were in control of Congress. Naively, I set off on my tireless campaign calling on Congress to rescind George’s authority to wage his war of terror while asking him “for what noble cause” did Casey and thousands of other have to die. Now, with Democrats in control of Congress, I have lost my optimistic naiveté and have become cynically pessimistic as I see you all caving into as one Daily Kos poster called: “Mr. 28%”

There is absolutely no sane or defensible reason for you to hand Bloody King George more money to condemn more of our brave, tired, and damaged soldiers and the people of Iraq to more death and carnage. You think giving him more money is politically expedient, but it is a moral abomination and every second the occupation of Iraq endures, you all have more blood on your hands.

Ms. Pelosi, Speaker of the House, said after George signed the new weak as a newborn baby funding authorization bill: “Now, I think the president’s policy will begin to unravel.” Begin to unravel? How many more of our children will have to be killed and how much more of Iraq will have to be demolished before you all think enough unraveling has occurred? How many more crimes will BushCo be allowed to commit while their poll numbers are crumbling before you all gain the political “courage” to hold them accountable. If Iraq hasn’t unraveled in Ms. Pelosi’s mind, what will it take? With almost 700,000 Iraqis dead and four million refugees (which the US refuses to admit) how could it get worse? Well, it is getting worse and it can get much worse thanks to your complicity.

Being cynically pessimistic, it seems to me that this new vote to extend the war until the end of September, (and let’s face it, on October 1st, you will give him more money after some more theatrics, which you think are fooling the anti-war faction of your party) will feed right into the presidential primary season and you believe that if you just hang on until then, the Democrats will be able to re-take the White House. Didn’t you see how “well” that worked for John Kerry in 2004 when he played the politics of careful fence sitting and pandering? The American electorate are getting disgusted with weaklings who blow where the wind takes them while frittering away our precious lifeblood and borrowing money from our new owners, the Chinese.

I knew having a Democratic Congress would make no difference in grassroots action. That’s why we went to DC when you all were sworn in to tell you that we wanted the troops back from Iraq and BushCo held accountable while you pushed for ethics reform which is quite a hoot…don’t’ you think? We all know that it is affordable for you all to play this game of political mayhem because you have no children in harm’s way…let me tell you what it is like:

You watch your reluctant soldier march off to a war that neither you nor he agrees with. Once your soldier leaves the country all you can do is worry. You lie awake at night staring at the moon wondering if today will be the day that you get that dreaded knock on your door. You can’t concentrate, you can’t eat, and your entire life becomes consumed with apprehension while you are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Then, when your worst fears are realized, you begin a life of constant pain, regret, and longing. Everyday is hard, but then you come up on “special” days…like upcoming Memorial Day. Memorial Day holds double pain for me because, not only are we supposed to honor our fallen troops, but Casey was born on Memorial Day in 1979. It used to be a day of celebration for us and now it is a day of despair. Our needlessly killed soldiers of this war and the past conflict in Vietnam have all left an unnecessary trail of sorrow and deep holes of absence that will never be filled.

So, Democratic Congress, with the current daily death toll of 3.72 troops per day, you have condemned 473 more to these early graves. 473 more lives wasted for your political greed: Thousands of broken hearts because of your cowardice and avarice. How can you even go to sleep at night or look at yourselves in a mirror? How do you put behind you the screaming mothers on both sides of the conflict? How does the agony you have created escape you? It will never escape me…I can’t run far enough or hide well enough to get away from it.

By the end of September, we will be about 80 troops short of another bloody milestone: 4000, and MoveOn.org will hold nationwide candlelight vigils and you all will be busy passing legislation that will snuff the lights out of thousands more human beings.

Congratulations Congress, you have bought yourself a few more months of an illegal and immoral bloodbath. And you know you mean to continue it indefinitely so “other presidents” can solve the horrid problem BushCo forced our world into.

It used to be George Bush’s war. You could have ended it honorably. Now it is yours and you all will descend into calumnious history with BushCo.

The Camp Casey Peace Institute is calling all citizens who are as disgusted as we are with you all to join us in Philadelphia on July 4th to try and figure a way out of this “two” party system that is bought and paid for by the war machine which has a stranglehold on every aspect of our lives. As for myself, I am leaving the Democratic Party. You have completely failed those who put you in power to change the direction our country is heading. We did not elect you to help sink our ship of state but to guide it to safe harbor.

We do not condone our government’s violent meddling in sovereign countries and we condemn the continued murderous occupation of Iraq .

We gave you a chance, you betrayed us.

Sincerely,
Cindy Sheehan
Founder and President of
Gold Star Families for Peace.

Founder and Director of
The Camp Casey Peace Institute

Eternally grieving mother of Casey Sheehan

84. laughed so hard, I felt that one in the pit of my stomach!
great post!
Ms. Sheehan exemplifies courage and rational thinking. This great lady makes a super point, and it being this - that there's no question now, that for all these years Democrats have been saying if we/they get in power, this invasion will come to an end, well, the history books are gonna show - we gave them a majority in Congress and they didn't do everything in their power to speak for the voters who think Mr. 28% (and dropping) has blood all over his hands and he's painting the walls of his PSYCH ROOM with it! The man is nutty, and sadly, the Democratic Congress agreed that this invasion needs to continue so another thousand soldiers can come home in boxes...

way to go Reid and gang!

I sent back Howard Dean's DNC letter with a survey back
to him today without a donation and a big fat juicy
OUT OF IRAQ NOW reason why- on his pre-paid envelop.

Hopefully soon I'll be dropping off 3000+ crosses into
our state of MA congress-peoples offices. (with the help
of a few of my friends)

Thanks for all you do, and all you have given.

Unless the Green Party candidate cures two forms of muscular dystrophy and brokers a peace deal between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, that Green candidate may have a lot of heart and gumption, but he ain't going nowhere.

When the going gets tough, the tough do not vote Green. They get off their asses and change the Democratic Party from the ground up. 2006 was only the beginning. Don't punt yet.

Good for Cindy and she's soooo right.

My DNC calling card arrived in the mail yesterday; ya know the one saying Enough is Enough, send us more $$$$ to fight GWB.

Well, with my finest red Sharpie marker, I wrote all over it what I thought the DNC could do with the quislers, aiders, abetters, Surrendercrats and Wimpocrats. No more donations from me to them, instead DU Gravelbot the check is in the mail to you today! Because yes, I've had enough ... enough of the Dems as well, with a few notable exceptions like Dennis Kucinich, Edward Kennedy, Russ Feingold, etc.

This is indeed the Dems war too because so many helped authorize it and have continually helped fund it. Like it not, BLOOD is on their hands.

Said they have the will of the American people on their side, and they are NOT using it.

Hundreds of dollars that I really can't even afford to send.
But I sent it, because I believed they were on my side.

87. Sorry, it's still Chimpy's war.
Truth: Chimpy is the the only one who can stop the war. Congress can cut the funds, but Chimpy can decide to leave them there without funding.

Truth: The "majority" in the House is thanks to conservative/centrist "Blue Dog" Democrats, almost all of whom voted for the funding.

Truth: The "majority" in the Senate is thanks to LIEbermann, who hasn't voted with the Dems ever since he gave them control of the Senate.

What some people think is a majority, isn't really a majority at all.

to speak for over three thousand mothers who have now lost sons and daughters in this miserable war. The MSM tries to belittle her but they only belittle themselves. If she and the grass roots keep up the pressure, then finally the Democratic Congress will have to act.

The truth hurts, doesn't it?

When it comes down to votes, the left is hardly in charge. Yet, like the freepers, you continue to delude yourself in a fantasy and your mind has become closed to anything that contradicts that world you live in.

No wonder politicians are blowing off the "netroots" groups.

I believe the minimum wage package was put into that war funding bill, so that's great and all, but an odd way to go about getting what you want so el crazy-presidente doesn't veto it - sacrificing guaranteed rows of men's lives for some needed bills and surely some pork... the coffin industry sure does good when a republican gets in office...

88. Dear Cindy, You're an idiot.
Her cart blanche condemning of the Democratic Party demonstrates the sheer ignorance of the situation.

One, the number of conservative/centrist "Blue Dogs" is greater than the margin of the Democrat's majority. If you look at the vote, almost all of them voted for funding. "Blue Dogs" + Repubs = We lose.

Two, the party's majority in the Senate is named Liebermann, who sided with Bush almost every time.

She should not have confused the court of public opinion with the actual balance of power in Congress. The Democrats will not be making policy this session, all they can do is stop Bush's worst policies from becoming law.

The only thing she accomplishes with this, is she gives the people on the other side of the aisle more reason to celebrate. For we are shooting ourselves in the foot. Repeatedly.

P.S. With this important vote going on, why the hell is she in Ireland and not in DC?!?

101. What are YOU doing to end the war?
Cindy is in Ireland because she was invited there by the Irish who are trying to shut down US air bases used as stopping points for soldiers being sent to war. She is recognized world wide as a leader in the international peace movement, because of her work and activism. She travels all over the world to promote peace. And she has undoubtedly spent more time lobbying Congress in the last 6 months than you have done in your entire lifetime.

So what have YOU done to end the war? How will you be spending Memorial Day? And how many of your family members have died in this war? Please share with us what gives you the right to criticize Cindy.

Cindy opens herself up to criticism and praise by putting herself out there.

I thought this country was supposed to encourage discussion and agreement. EVERY Sheehan thread turns out like this one - if anyone dares disagree with her on any issue or method they are automatically pro-war and accused of not giving a shit about the war.

WHY does this have to be so black and white?

Instead of discussing that that poster said you attacked him. We're going to have more progress in our fight by encouraging dialog and ideas, then and only then will we be able to educate those who need to be.

"Dear Car,

Since your radio no longer works, I can only assume that you belong to the finance company, and that your actions in the future will be to break down, and refuse to listen to me more, as if you're listening to me now - so I will be abandoning you, and telling everyone else to abandon their cars as well since we all know that ALL cars will just be breaking down in the future.

Just because you start and appear to be going down the road, doesn't mean that you won't blow a gasket just to spite me. Don't expect me to thank you for all the rides you gave me before you broke down forever, with the radio just being the Proof.. I won't thank you because I was the one driving, not YOU.."

Makes about as much sense.

That's all we need to be doing now, ROVE'S BIDDING, break up the only Opposition party we have, and all go run around in ROW BOATS, (the Green Party) telling everyone how we're going to take on a Battleship - we just can't trust the AirCraft Carrier anymore, since the Toaster went out..

Now she appears to be not only craving Media, but also jumping on the old "Kick 'em while they're down to gain favor with the unhappy at the moment" Train..

I'm afraid that although I thought very highly of Cindy, since I first met her when I was filming the Downing Street Minutes in the basement of Congress, I've lost respect for her. I would defend to the death her RIGHT to say these things, but I'm pretty much through agreeing with most of what she says, except for "End the War". But I've always been for that anyway.

Get back on track Cindy, quit pushing for the GREEN Party, and USING the DEMS when you do it.. They've bent over backwards for you, I SAW IT, and you are basically stabbing them in the back.

All I've got to say, flame away, I don't care.

I agree with Cindy's assessment of the status of the Democratic Party, though I'm not leaving as long as there is a Dennis Kucinich I can support.
John Edwards is saying some of the right things, but I cannot bring myself to trust him based on his track record. The rest of our Corporate Owned candidates are beneath my contempt.

The UGLY TRUTH: The Democratic Party now OWNS the Iraq Occupation.
The DEATH & Destruction that will occur this Summer is PAID FOR by the Democratic Party Leadership.
The BLOOD is now on their (and our) hands.

97. Letters to Pelosi and Reid Sent This Morning
I have voted straight Democratic since 1962, the first year I was eligible to vote. In all that time, I have never been more ashamed of my party than after your cave-in to Mr. 28%. What were you thinking? Have you no shame?

Unless you do something quickly to bring this bloody occupation to an end, I promise to work personally for your defeat next year. I also promise to work for the defeat of any DINO who voted for this abomination.

This is no longer just "Bush's War," it is your war as well.

119. Excellent.
Not just anonymous keyboard courage!
I salute you, Sir!
:patriot:

My hardcopy letter to the Dem leadership(?) will follow.
Congress should be inundated with letters expressing the same sentiment.
As long as The Democratic Party believes they can take our vote for granted, they will continue to bow down to special interests (War Profiteers and AIPAC) for their bribe money.

After the "secret" Free Trade Deal, the complete capitulation on Iraq, and the sanctioning of EXXON to steal the Iraqi Oilfields, I've had enough.

I will support only those individual Democrats who lead the small bush* opposition in the Democratic Party, but feel NO allegiance to the Party as a whole.

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.
