Doctors operated on Holbrooke Saturday to fix a tear in his aorta, a key heart artery. U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley says the 69-year-old diplomat has been joined by his family.

The veteran diplomat previously served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and was the chief architect of the 1995 Dayton peace accords that ended the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Holbrooke was hospitalized Friday after falling ill during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the State Department in Washington.

2. I hope he'll be ok. My sister had surgery to repair an aortal dissection
in Feb. 2008. The surgery went well, but there were all sorts of complications after. She hasn't fully recovered but, thankfully, she's still with us.
