How Repubs get people to vote against their own best interests.

Muttart is perhaps the world’s leading expert on working-class voters in English-speaking countries, having studied their behaviour and attitudes not only in Canada and also in Britain, Australia and America. He has found that in every country working-class voters may form the base for successful center-left governments but are crucially responsible for the rise of center-right leaders like Harper, Australia’s John Howard, and Margaret Thatcher.”

There then follows a detailed analysis of what motivates and interests working-class voters, with a focus on how to manipulate them into voting against their own economic and social best interests. Mr. Olson, quoting Mr. Muttart, notes the deep seams of optimism, fear, pride, anger at disrespect, belief in public order, patriotism, and concern about rapid change that motivate working class electorates. And he describes how conservative politicians can frame campaigns around these themes.

Note: Rob Ford is the newly elected mayor of Toronto, Canada's largest city. Don Cherry is a flamboyant hockey commentator. 'Timmy's' is the most popular coffee chain in Canada. But this tactic is being used in several countries, including the US.

1. Very simple if we think about it. It is human nature to desire to
be part of the "In crowd". How many people try to be
on the side of the winning sports team. Same thing
for politics. Realizing this you then create cicumstanced
to bring people to your side.

1. Marginalize Liberalism, make "Liberal" a bad word.
Do this strongly enough that people will not want
to be associated with Liberalism. As soon as
some Liberals change to Progressive then do the
same. Spread lies. Liberals are immoral. Liberals
look down on or do not respect working class people.

In other words make Liberalism, Progressivism
socially unacceptable. There are literally people
who will say they are conservative to fit into social
situations and quietly vote Democratic. The saddest
result is all the Democrats who simply do
not participate at all.

2. Close to times of election, they find emotional issues
which create "Mob Psychology" and bring in the crowd
vote their way.

3. Constantly, have positive Messages of Conservatism
out there every day. Right now, Fox has been running
a program featuring the past future in glowing terms
--Conservatism. Now they have developed another special
on Bush Gore.

Conservatives get themselves on C-Span pushing books
on Conservatism.

Goebbels has nothing on the Republicans.

You have to give them credit. They work every hour
of every day to promote their philosophy.

2. "anger at disrespect"
is a big one. The political handlers are excellent at exploiting anger and especially resentment of being looked down upon.
Listen to the themes of country music (other than love songs) and you will hear a variation on that anger and resentment. Throw in the lies from faux et. al. and you have a group of people primed to be led to follow what feeds their self esteem.

3. Just another example of why Democrats don't win 90% of elections
People, not "experts" or politicians, know what is in their own best interest. Some people believe their individual rights and freedoms are more important than how much money or how many possessions, they have. This is why telling them it is somebody elses responsibility to pay for their food, healthcare or retirement, does not work. This is why telling them to 'vote for me, I may take this from you but I will give you that,' does not work. This is why telling them 'vote for me and I will make sure government leaves you alone,' does work.

They aren't voting against their own best interests, they are voting against what people like this guy THINKS should be in their best interest. And judging by past election numbers, that doesn't work.

4. R-E-S-P-E-C-T
as the song has it...the one thing every person, and every country wants.

Deny them that, and you have a fight on your hands.
