State Department To Columbia University Students: DO NOT Discuss WikiLeaks On Facebook, Twitter
An email from SIPA's Office of Career Services went out Tuesday afternoon with a caution from the official, an alumnus of the school. Students who will be applying for jobs in the federal government could jeopardize their prospects by posting links to WikiLeaks online, or even by discussing the leaked documents on social networking sites, the official was quoted as saying.

" recommends that you DO NOT post links to these documents nor make comments on social media sites such as Facebook or through Twitter," the Office of Career Services advised students. "Engaging in these activities would call into question your ability to deal with confidential information, which is part of most positions with the federal government."

While the massive disclosure of once-classified documents detailing some of the nation's most tightly-guarded secrets has inflamed allies and enemies alike, the move by the State Department represents a new front in the administration's camapaign against unauthorized leaks.

The State Department has yet to respond to requests for comment.

2. The Masters are running scared...
For too long, they've been able to operate in the shadows.

Assange is a hero to those who want freedom and honesty and an end to back room deals.

4. Columbia's grad. school of journalism is ranked # 1
journalism school in the country. Wonder whether it will go along with this vis a vis their students. If it caves (to use the operative verb of Obama's administration), we see freedom of the press sinking beneath the waves of capitalist greed.

5. The letter was to students of the school of international politics, not journalism.
Just to clarify. No less wrong.

7. It's not about the documents but their ability to keep confidential info
just that, Confidential. When my son joined the Navy they checked EVERYTHING beginning from middle school, fortunately my son is/was an introvert that focused on school and volunteerism so for him it was not an issue especially since he did not have any electronic account of any kind. If you are working for the government, especially military, they can expect to be investigated by any of these dept CIA, FBI, DoD, ATF & DEA as was the case for my son...one of the investigators thought his name was changed or something because he was so clean & others only had nice things about him including the State police & two Police departments since most of his volunteer work was with them.

Columbia is advising them "correctly" what you say "may" be used against you, these kids should not lose an opportunity to work in their chosen field because they forwarded what the State Dept may consider providing confidential information. This should be sent to all kids with a eye on working for the federal government because it may be the one reason they do not get that call back.

10. Truth be known, Cal State University of Fullerton told students
"do not put your personal life on Facebook, Twitter or the Internet", period. That does not mean for you to put your professional life out there to get a job. What it meant, preceptive employers are now looking into what you do in your personal life and how you conduct yourself. Employers, more than ever (because they can), are now concerned about what you do away from work. This is for employer to have the 'better employee.' Henry Ford would have been proud of this incursion into one's personal life for the 'better employee.'

As of this moment the State Department is the subject of these leaks. These leaks have been an embarrassment, 1) that the leaks had occurred, 2) what the State Department has been doing in the name of this country. This is a major fuck-up, now you have people jumping through their asses putting out this fire storm. A lot of people have no idea what they are doing at this point more-or-less what to do about it.

Just wait till the banking memos come out. A lot of people are going to have asshole stamped across their forehead, both in government and the private sector.

13. In short, "Yes!" The longer answer is, 'Do not give a reason for somebody not to hire you!'
Unfortunately, appearances are everything today...

12. So, how would they know what people are talking about on FB
unless they are monitoring every word we say, everywhere we go?

And that is a threat which is probably totally anti-Constitutional. I hope the ACLU takes it up.

What a great police state we live in. And I know there will be people along to defend this. Which is the main reason they keep doing it.

What the students should do is organize a protest which should consist of every, single student talking about Wikileaks on FB.
