Until Atheists start bombing churches and kidnapping\murdering christians in the middle of the night - it is NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE!

Not everything is comparable to some other horrible situation.

Keep your ridiculous hyperbole to yourself.

5. It is the blossom of such things.
'Keep your ridiculous hyperbole to yourself.'...is this calling me out? I think I can voice an opinion without you being rude. My point is that this is the beginning. The forces that first ignited the far right Christians are smiling proudly as they drive this country into a division that is not repairable. IMO if I am still allowed to have one here. I hope you are on the side of the Christians if not then you do the atheists a disservice in your response. I was thinking that it would be the Christians that would do the bombing and the cross burning and the yard sign burning and the public admonishing. Who knew?

12. Thank you for the spelling.
Yes, the United States of Ameriraq it is. Even though I joke it is a sad thing. My mother is very right wing and I know that if there were a program for turning in non- Christian, free thinkers she would do it in a heartbeat. When I realized this I began to know how the Iraqis could tell each other apart. So sad that so many had to die at the hand of *.

13. Sunni v. Shite is a pan-Islamic issue that started after the death of Mohammed
The correct parallel would be Catholic v. Protestant - which has been a large part of xtian history already, so it's really no different, in terms of factionalism.

The distinction in this case is reality vs. myth.

2. This all seems like a waste of time and money.
Plenty of atheists celebrate Christmas, after all. Santa Claus, reindeer and Christmas trees have nothing to do with religion. And surely it's possible to believe in God *and* the Big Bang?

3. I was just commenting on the irony of Christians clutching their pearls at an atheist billboard...
when Christian billboards are routinely a hundred times nastier.

15. The funny thing about religion is that it's honored in the breach.
Even the most rabid fundies, the ones that believe in biblical inerrancy, pick and choose which parts of the Bible they pay attention to. The moderates, do it even more, and mix it freely with secular stuff and other stuff.

The fundies tell us that we have to believe in all the Bible, that it's inerrant, and that we have to respect all of it? Nobody does that. Not even the fundies actually do that. You see them going apeshit about wearing blended fabrics and eating shellfish? Not many of them, but boooooy, do the howl about homosexuality.

And they don't mention some of the really fucked up stories in the Bible, like Genesis 19, where Lot tried to protect the angels from being raped by a mob - by offering his own daughters to be gang-raped. Or the part where a couple kids snarked off at God, so He sent a bear that killed a whole bunch of Children.

Read MineralMan's threads in the Religion/Theology forum for more of the parts of the bible that people don't take seriously. Because doing so would be completely batshit.

17. Of course it is, & many Christians & other people of faith believe in both
it's the extreme fundies on both ends of the spectrum that like to have temper tantrums & paint the other side with broad brushes. Ironically, they then turn around & wonder why no one likes them, but instead of looking at their own behavior, they blame it all on the other side "hating" them.

6. Here's a column I wrote today on this:
http://www.midshorelife.com/blog/dwayne/so-called-war-christmas-waged-ignorant-armies-both-sides

There’s a controversial billboard in New Jersey featuring what appears to be a traditional nativity scene:

A bright star shines in the night sky above the silhouettes of a man and a woman kneeling beside a manger in a humble barn, with three men riding on camels approaching.

What’s causing the big controversy (if the strife-hungry news media can be believed, anyway) is not this rather conventional representation of the birth of Jesus; it’s the eye-grabbing message above it that creating a stir:

“You know it’s a MYTH! This season, celebrate REASON!”

According to American Atheists, the group sponsoring the billboard, the message is targeting what they call “closet atheists” who are supposedly afraid to express their true beliefs, or nonbeliefs, during this time of year.

However, as you can imagine, the billboard has also caught the attention of many Christian believers.

The Catholic League, in fact, has sponsored a billboard across from the atheists’ sign featuring a large image of people dressed as the stereotypical Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus with “You Know it’s Real. This Season, Celebrate Jesus.” written above it in large letters.

In the report I saw on TV Wednesday morning, the CBS correspondent, known for her quirky focus on offbeat stories, featured representatives from the two opposing sides. The atheist basically derided people of faith for believing in a God that everyone “knows” doesn’t exist, while the believer accused atheists of believing in nothing or in the “fairy tale” of evolution.

Blah blah blah humbug.

9. I know of two people who "came out" because of billboards and books.....
I think it is nice for people who do not believe this crap to see that they are not alone.

11. The religious right is such a corrosive influence in American life
people have to stand up to their hatred and bigotry.

if someone wants to hold a religious belief that claims they have a right to create second-class citizenship for people based upon their sexual orientation, this is no different than claiming that same right based upon someone's race.

It's bigotry in both cases.

And bigots deserved to be called out when they use their religion as a form of hate. They do not have the right to impose their religious beliefs upon this entire nation.

For those christians who are upset by this - this is what I have to say - if you hadn't tried to stuff your religious bullshit down people's throats, you would not be getting this push back now.

You don't like it? You're reaping what you sowed.
