Is America blessed?
Is America blessed?

Washington Post political reporter Karen Tumulty wrote Monday about the growing use of the idea of "American exceptionalism" by political conservatives as a "battle cry from a new front in the ongoing culture wars."

Sarah Palin and many other prominent conservatives assert that "God has granted America a special role in human history." It is this belief about America's destiny that they say is "under attack" by liberals who downplay America's distinctiveness.

How do you interpret this?

1. I don't know about 'blessed' but there's a pretty good case for 'touched'.

2. I interpret it as conservative arrogance and/or idiocy.
Is America mentioned in the Bible?

3. I am a Liberal of Faith, these people are charlatans making the stoopid fearful
as the Catholic faith did in the early centuries leading by fear, so are these scum who preach wealth is good and hate is better.

4. Who said this?
“But there is something else I believe, and that is that there is a God. . . . And this God again has blessed our efforts during the past years.”

“I would like to thank Providence and the Almighty for choosing me of all people to be allowed to wage this battle for our nation.”

“I follow the path assigned to me by Providence with the instinctive sureness of a sleepwalker

“I feel like God wants me to run for President. I can’t explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen . . . I know it won’t be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it.”

“Providence withdrew its protection and our people fell, fell as scarcely any other people heretofore. In this deep misery we again learn to pray. . . . The mercy of the Lord slowly returns to us again. And in this hour we sink to our knees and beseech our almighty God that he may bless us, that He may give us the strength to carry on the struggle for the freedom, the future, the honor, and the peace of our people. So help us God.”

“The Ten Commandments are a code of living to which there’s no refutation. These precepts correspond to irrefragable needs of the human soul.”

“I trust God speaks through me. Without that, I couldn’t do my job”

5. I think we WERE once blessed,
because we were a generous and peaceful nation. Since the age of greed and Reaganism, I don't think God blesses us anymore. It is because of the conservative movement in America that misfortune has befallen us. That's how I see it and I truly believe it. Our hearts have become black because of the rightwing ideology. They have stained our self respect, and stained our reputation among the other nations of the world.

12. The more people who believe in American exceptionalism shout about it
Edited on Tue Nov-30-10 03:12 PM by BurtWorm
the less exceptional America becomes. It becomes just another country with a rabid right wing.

14. Thank you for asking the question.
I find that I now need to listen to Caroline Myss' "The Sacred Contract Of America" again. It's been awhile since I listened.
