"You Can Say Merry Christmas to Me"
Git yer buttons before they run out:

-------------------------------------------------

DE PERE - It's the holiday season, and some say they’re not hearing enough of the greeting, “Merry Christmas” in public.

"I think the Christmas holiday needs to be more specific,” said Praise Him Ministries Chaplain Ron Urmanski.

http://fwix.com/foxcities/share/cefd74d199/bringing_christmas_back_with_buttons

-------------------------------------------------

Maybe I'll get a button made that says, "Don't assume I celebrate your holiday."

Any other button ideas?

13. Well said.
I am not a christian, but if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, or a a 'God bless you', or anything else I take it as wish of something positive. I would react the same if the wish came from any religion.

I, personally, say Happy Holidays, but am in no way offended by another's well-meaning wishes.

I grew up in Cleveland, and heard "Happy Hanukkah" many times. I received it in the spirit it was intended- I didn't get my shorts in a bunch.

And I'll smile and say "Thanks! You Too!". I will not throw a hissyfit or give a pompous lecture along the lines of "How dare you assume I celebrate (whatever)". Life's too short.

11. Happy Diwali
I was raised Jewish and am now agnostic, but I try to take things in the spirit in which I assume they are meant. And I try to look for the good in people (although some Conservatives really try me). Christmas is a secular American Holiday as much as it is a Christian religious observance. Maybe that's sad because it's supposed to be about a Lord and Savior, not how much crap we can accrue on a day to gorge ourselves and watch football (like Thanksgiving but add the loot). However, for better or worse, Christmas is a national holiday in the US, apart from any religious significance. So, when some one wishes me a "Merry Christmas" I assume they mean the secular holiday rather than the religious. And I appreciate the sentiment, because I assume they mean it the same way as "Happy Thanksgiving" or "Happy Fourth of July."

That peace on earth, goodwill towards mankind stuff is pretty neat too, we need more of that.

16. the Christian pastor in the article says,
"Christians have been so quiet on this they haven't really been ah, you know, getting out there and fighting some of this political correctness,” Urmanski said.

Only an evangelical pastor would go looking for something to fight about at Christmas.

22. I'm not sure why I should be offended at a Christmas greeting.
I'm an atheist, but I'm happy when anyone has some cheer in their voice. I'll return the greeting, since I celebrate Christmas as the secular holiday it has become.

Grinches are not very nice people, I'm thinking.

27. "Merry Christmas" works for me
My late sister was an atheist and she loved Christmas, celebrating it like no other person I have ever known. She could say "Merry Christmas" and mean it. What is your hang up?

35. The OP is about people with a hang-up about others NOT saying "Merry Christmas."
... which is the way it always is with this issue. No one ever came down on "Merry Christmas" as though it were offensive to start with. Stores and employers and card companies and people simply started saying "Happy Holidays" more often because it applies to more people. Bill O'Reilly, et al, interpreted this as a "War on Christmas" and had a big cow about it.

"Merry Christmas" works for me too, but I usually go with "... Holidays" simply because, while we all take a winter "holiday," many people don't celebrate Christmas. Seems kind of clueless to keep saying to Jewish people, for example. But the only real-life complaint I've heard was a year or too ago I offered a "Happy Holidays" to a co-worker, who snapped, "Merry CHRIST-MAS!" in return.

Ridiculous.

57. Good summation.
This issue is the perfect illustration of how some people will go out of their way to be offended. Like most everyone in this thread, I'm happy to return a cheerful greeting of any kind. But then, I'm one of those who never understood why "Can't we all just get along?" was funny...

28. I usually say "Have a nice holiday season!" but am not averse to
wishing a Merry Christmas, agnostic that I am. I tend to do the latter in just the few days before Christmas; the former is a generic greeting from late November through New Year's.
