I mean unless they're at the doctor or with a partner. I don't think you have to go through security to get on a private jet. I could be wrong, I haven't used my private jet in so long I've forgotten. :P

1. You are correct
Those with their own planes don't have to go through the same security as the unwashed masses.

7. And why is that, anyways?
Wasn't the big security concern after 9/11 that planes NOT be used as weapons?

What's to stop a terrorist from chartering his OWN plane and carrying on enough weapons to overcome the flight crew?

It makes no sense to exclude private planes from TSA security.

21. Should you have to go through security at your own boat dock?
How about if you own an RV? Should you have to go through a TSA check before you get in and drive your 45 foot motorhome?

"It makes no sense to exclude private planes from TSA security"

The people that own the Cessna's, the Beechcrafts and the Executive Jets in the US are not the threat you think they are and neither is the mere existence of them.

27. Let's restrict this to planes
And I'm not advocating for TSA security on ALL private planes, just the big ones, like the Gulfstreams or the private Boeings.

And personally, I don't think ANY of them are much of a threat, just that the TSA is applying security way out of proportion to public flights.

26. Small planes have and will continue to crash into building like the WTC...
but they usually are larger enough to carry enough fuel to be a threat beyond symbolism.

2. You don't. (edited)

Although there has been some talk about doing so, there is no TSA at any "Executive" or General Aviation facility to my knowledge.

I am a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and my chapter meets at Page Field in Ft. Myers. The building which houses the Airports services (Fuel, rental cars, pilots lounge/weather etc.) has no TSA personnel at all. If you own a private aircraft, be it a jet of single engine prop plane, there is no security other than needing to know the code to get through the gate to get to your hangar or tie-down space.

You can't just walk in off the street and expect to walk out onto the ramp, however. You will be questioned by the AV Centers employees, but there is no Federal presence.

Edit: BTW, not everyone that owns their own plane is "super rich" either. There are many hundreds of thousands of private aircraft in this country and a large percentage of them are owned by regular folks, they just choose to spend their spare money on that avocation, just like boat owners do.

4. It's only a matter of time before Al Qaeda figures this out...
and with a huge donation from some Saudi Arabians buys a Gulstream which will then be flow into the Capitol Building or the White House.

19. If you think they haven't figured this out already, you would be mistaken.
Don't forget that Mohammad Atta and the others trained at US flight schools at US General Aviation airports, one of which is about 12 miles from where I am sitting (Venice, FL).

None of this is a secret known only to users.

But again, if you think it is a simple thing for a total stranger to just walk out onto the tarmac at Page Field or any other facility in this country and not be questioned, you would be mistaken. Buying a Gulfstream isn't like buying a car or even a heavy truck. You raise questions from authorities and those questions are going to be answered or you aren't going to be able to move the plane.

Is it perfect? No, it isn't. But adding layers of unnecessary security to General Aviation is pointless.

20. Very expensive though
The "genius" if you will, of 911, was that it was fairly cheap.

6. I wonder how many people who were born here have ever
attempted to bring down an airliner, or who have brought uzis, aks or other non essential garb with them on an airline flight. It seems to me that we are targeting people who have proven themselves good to go.

are people who say, "Statistics never lie, but liars use statistics" and I do believe the baggers twist anything into a political phantasm in order to lie effectively to themselves.

22. If they fly on regular planes they would
Why wouldn't they? Is there an exception for first class? Different security?

Some of the 911 hijackers had first class seats, so it wouldn't make sense not to put them through the same thing.

28. Some airports have different lines for different types of passengers
At SFO United maintains a special line for its first class, business and elite fliers - i.e., people who fly a lot or spend a lot of money with them. It's the same machines and same processes, though, but it seems to move a little faster because the people in it are more used to the procedure. (I think they get the nicer TSA folks, too: one of them wished me a happy birthday last year.)

29. My own post got me researching it
Practically all of the hijackers were in first class or business class. Only two were in economy class.

So as to be closer to the front, presumably, if you come from economy and go through first class, you could be more noticeable to the flight attendants.

25. none of the Senators either. They just have to say I'm senator so and so
and they are probably waved right through even if they are on a regular flight, which I doubt. So how can they understand the problems for ordinary people?? And we probably pay for their transportation, too.
