And so it begins: Turkey fryer blamed for Olathe fire
A turkey fryer is being blamed for a fire about 6 p.m. at an Olathe residence in the 900 block of North Canyon Drive, the fire department said. The fryer was sitting outside a family’s garage, and a neighbor used an extinguisher to put out the fire. The fire department estimated damage at $1,000.

3. Deep-fried turkey is delicious - and if somebody else's house has to burn down
in the process, that's a price I'm willing to pay... :9

9. I'll never get it either
I have a friend who talks about doing this every year. I think it's nuts. Let a professional at a restaurant fry a turkey. And she wants to do it on her patio. LOL

:hide:

I josh, of course. I don't wish any sort of fire or damage to anyone's home, regardless of what they eat.

7. you can buy a big ol electric turkey fryer now
saw one at costco. few years back, my oven went out on me on thanksgiving day, TYVM, so i hopped out and bought one of those propane deep fryers. in the end, i just couldn't do it. it freaked me out too much to think i might burn my house down! i just had the oven fixed later and cooked it after t'giving.

10. I deep fry my turkeys every chance I get
It's expensive, but quick and the tastiest way to eat turkey. It is damned dangerous. It is done only outside away from the house. And no alcohol is allowed to be consumed anywhere near it by anyone.

12. What could go wrong with boiling oil on an open fire?
Insert one large bird and watch the fireworks.

16. Not a problem if the bird is dry.
The problem is that people drop wet turkeys into the hot oil. The water instantly boils, splashing hot oil out of the deep fryer.

17. The problem is, as someone said, a wet bird.
But also too much oil. People miscalculate how much oil is displaced by the weight of the turkey and the oil splatters out of the fryer. That's a recipe for disaster.

:(
