1. I remember watching the Olympics when I was a kid

I remember the commentators' constant comments that USSR and GDR athletes were all members of the military, criticizing economic conditions under totalitarian Communist regimes where military careers were mandatory because there was no freedom to choose what you wanted to be and anyway there were no other options outside the military for the proletariat to achieve any level of success in any field.
