National Geographic article on the Pebble Mine and Bristol Bay
Edited on Tue Nov-16-10 08:13 PM by XOKCowboy
Thanks to Shannyn Moore and Trout Unlimited for bringing this article to my attention. It is a very in-depth view about one of Americas last wild fisheries and ecosystems that could be lost for the gold and copper beneath it.

When I weigh the benefits to each side here is what I come up with. The people who would benefit from Pebble are the worldwide investors (BIG TIME) and a few hundred short sighted locals who'll get temporary (in the larger sense) jobs working the mines.

If the mine is not built the people who would benefit are those benefiting now. The subsistence fishermen and the commercial fishermen and of course the salmon. This second option also benefits all of America because we save our last best place to pass along to our children.

There is a line in the story that pretty much sums it all up for me. Bristol Bay still possesses what has been squandered elsewhere—abundance.

There is no middle ground. If the mine is built you can kiss the Bristol Bay ecosystem goodbye. I side with the salmon.
