Edited on Fri Nov-12-10 04:48 PM by 11 Bravo
The guy who has done more than anyone else to expose the hypocrisy and bias of FoxNews is now a "Fox apologist". The guy who routinely skewers Republican bigotry, stupidity, and general asshattery is now a "Republican stooge".
Fuck me with a chain saw. I thought "99%ers" referred to the bottom 99% of the wealth holders who are routinely fucked over in favor the top 1%. WRONG! A 99%er is one who only hews to exactly what you believe a paltry 99% of the time, and is therefore a stooge, turncoat, apologist hack. Thanks for setting me straight.

Both also walk a thin line between their art/livelihood and world view.

Both have made choices and have talent to have voice, access, and personal well-being.

I am glad they have programs that inform and entertain.

7. Stewart just made a mistake
By trying to play both sides in an attempt to appear unbiased. His mistake was equating Keith Olbermann with the Right Wing hacks. He also forgot the demographics of his audience.

He deserves to be taken to task. But he also deserves recognition of what he contributes, and to be allowed to recover.

I doubt anyone really sees equivalence between Olbermann and O'Riley/Beck/Limbaugh/Savage.

91. I've just finished reading "The Anti-American Manifesto"
And my perspective is a bit refreshed.

People like KO are the necessary reaction to people like Beck/O'Riley/Limbaugh. The Many are going to need to organize around an ideology that unites them in the absence of a single leader.

Beck/O'Riley/Limbaugh, along with people like Palin, are successfully creating the kind of decentralized, leaderless, ideologically-based organization necessary to survice in a police/security state. Like Al Qaeda, the Tea Party has a variety of spokespersons espousing a unifying ideology, each one plays a role, but each one is completely expendable. Even the ideology is somewhat amorphous, allowing it to accommodate a variety of motivating forces. We often use the term "meme" in a derogatory fashion, but memes are necessary in a world where individuals can be discredited or disappeared.

The Few, along with their citizen-poodles on the Right, are way ahead of the Many/Left in this regard. The ironony is that they are mindlessly following Al Qaeda style methodology, and would condemn anyone who pointed out the parallels.

Of course, I could be wrong.

People conveniently forget that it was co-hosted by an actor playing a character who is a literal parody of right-wing personalities and talking points. I don't recall seeing a left-wing parody character on the stage to "balance" against Colbert.

Stewart doesn't "wear his heart on his sleeve" unless you think his heart is made of ironic post-modern comedic bits. Is that your point? The heart-on-sleeve crowd is over at MSNBC, if anywhere. That, or maybe "The View."

42. I like Jon Stewart and his opinion is valuable
I also like Olbermann, Maddow and some of CNN's News segments.

The job of the media is to do the News. Unfortunately, we have just had a week of the Media doing navel gazing and interviewing themselves.

Olbermann became the News. That is wrong.

Rachel interviews Jon Stewart to talk about the delivery or "the messaging" of the News. That is wrong.

The media needs to do its job and do the News.

Think of this, how did the Viet Nam war finally end? Because Walter Cronkite reported about it nightly and Americans grew weary of seeing the daily list of US casualties while they were eating dinner.

News is News.

We don't have much of that right now and that is what I think is the crux of what Jon's critique of the media is.

Linda Ellerbee once stated in an interview the most important lesson she learned from an editor was "never ride the Circus Elephant" when doing a news story. That means when reporting the circus is coming to town, you never take up their offer to let you ride the elephant, because then you have made the story about you and not the circus's arrival that you should be covering.

All the major newscasters need to learn that lesson again.

49. I cam away from the Maddow interview wondering when Jon fell in love with his own voice
And I'm a long-time Daily Show fan!

But Jon has developed an ego that is far too big for his little body. Seriously. I'll still watch the show, because it is his WRITERS that are the ones who are spot on, in terms of politics.

Jon needs to snap out of it. Polishing one's own halo in public just pisses people off.

50. I finally got around to watching that show this morning
I have no problem with Stewart or KO or any of our other good democratic personalities. I didn't get any of the shit from the show as I've been reading here on du. sometimes I wonder when it was that du jumped the shark, cause sometimes it sure seems to have and this is one thing that makes it seem so to me.

53. Passionate, aren't you?
I think some people disagreed with him. That does not make him persona non grata at all. It just means some people disagreed with him on something he said.

Chill out, would ya?

54. I can't keep up
Reminds me of my crazy Italian family--one minute a relative is "in", the next s/he's "out". When my brother arrives from California for a visit after a couple of years, he always asks for the scorecard--who are we speaking to this week? When I visit DU, I'm never sure who was once beloved yesterday is now "evil incarnate" today. :P

70. Pretty much my point.
Now read the thread to see how it has been interpreted by some of the more ideologically pure than thou crowd.

79. I like Jon Stewart. The Daily Show is pretty funny stuff...
I haven't been reading many threads in GD and I'm not even sure what all the anger's about. I like the Daily Show, think he's a really funny guy and don't really care if someone else doesn't like him...

86. frankly, i think you should work on your expository skills.
but jon lost me when equating right and left in the media. he's not only wrong, but harmful, on a KEY point. and that position is sufficient for me to jettison him from my pantheon.

jon knows what side his bread is buttered on.
