Even though there is an important difference between Memorial Day and Veterans' Day, it's hard this year for me to think of honoring veterans without thinking of the more than 60 guys I knew who didn't make it back from Vietnam--including two roommates, one of whom was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
Usually I'm better at reserving those thoughts for Memorial Day, but some years powerful emotions are triggered by Veterans' Day, as well. This just happens to be one of those years, and I think I understand why that's so.
I'm not going to to react poorly to someone who wishes me a 'Happy Veterans' Day.' I appreciate the the sentiment, and that it's well-intentioned (even if I can't help wincing a little bit inside).
Yeah, you've found the right words. They do express it better.
