Middle class eco-terrorism
Edited on Thu Nov-11-10 08:34 PM by Kurt_and_Hunter
Over the last two years an appalling house has been being built on a suburban corner near McLean, VA. It was like a 50' cube impossibly close to the street on all sides in a neighborhood where yards and trees are the norm.

Hard to believe zoning allowed it... and construction seemed to stop for a year so it was probably tied up in court, challenged by the neighbors.

At some point construction resumed.

Someone spray-painted on the house, "I am Gigantor. I hate yards and trees."

The house was almost finished (still unoccupied) and then mysteriously burned to the ground last week. Now a giant smoking crater.

Maybe it was an accident. But since it was so controversial and happened to be a week or two away from being occupied it doesn't take much tin-foil to think that somebody in the neighborhood simply decided to torch the thing.

The local news didn't go there, but this headline doesn't leave much to the imagination: "'Neighborhood eyesore' burns to the ground."

It was an eye-sore, but it's kind of scary that you can fight the neighbors in court and win, and then your house happens to catch fire.

Eco-terrorism goes upper-middle class... suburban zoning vigilantees... weird.

(In the suburbs ELF stands for eco-terrorist I'd like to... well, you know.)
