The chairmen of President Obama’s fiscal commission sparked a political firestorm Wednesday with the early release of a report proposing sweeping changes to Social Security, Medicare and the tax code.

(snip)
Labor unions and liberal Democrats lit into the preliminary proposal, which the two chairmen touted as the first serious plan to tackle the country’s growing debt.

“Any final proposal from the commission should do what is right for our children and grandchildren’s economic security as well as for our nation’s fiscal security, and it must do what is right for our seniors, who are counting on the bedrock promises of Social Security and Medicare,” she said in a statement.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said the chairmen had told “working Americans to ‘Drop Dead,’” while Rep. Raul Grijalva (R-Ariz.) faulted the report for cutting Social Security benefits while reducing corporate and upper-income taxes.

3. at least we have Nancy speaking up for us
of course the 1st things they always go after are those nasty entitlements. I read what they want to cut, same things they always have. But their is room in the budget for more corporate tax breaks.

4. Oh how powerful we are now! The commission, appointed by the Democratic President,

Is now denounced by Pelosi.

After all, the Dems in leadership positions need to keep up the Kabuki theater, continuing the pretense of how they are really are on our side.

At least until November 2012, when they might get the majority back and then they will need to be all bipartisan, and conciliatory with Republicans once again.

And who cares if it is absolutely impossible for the Dems in the house to get anywhere?

Let the notion of the Two Party System in America shine on!

No, once the lame duck Congress is retired, this Report will come back to haunt us.

The Democrats are no longer the majority in the House.

And newly elected Republicans to the House will be eager to quote its findings.

13. They are just softening us up to support big benefit cuts that won't be as "bad" as these.

That's how the game is played.

9. There should be symbolic bonfires around the country of
those proposals, any proposals that touches the SS program. Glad to hear Pelosi is ripping it apart as she should. I hope the WH will join her.

12. I think we are being played as suckers. Here's how it may play out.

After some public protests and "debate", the Commission will release on or about December 1st an updated and revised report that will not be as harsh as the "first" released draft.

After more "debate" in Congress a slightly milder version of the Commissions newest proposal will be put up for a vote with President Obama's backing.

We will have stopped the outrageous 1st draft but "had to give a little, make a few compromises" in order to stop the worst initial proposals made in the 1st commission draft.

The newly "reformed" and better benefit cuts plan will be passed by both houses and signed by President Obama.

Let the cuts begin!
