my nephew was very seriously injured in Afghanistan yesterday (IED)

My nephew, Trey, was very seriously injured yesterday in Sangin Afghanistan by an IED. A marine in his second enlistment and 4th tour, he was leading his platoon on foot patrol when the IED went off. We don't yet know if he will survive his injuries which are listed V.S.I., the most severe category of injury.

55. update on my nephew...

Trey is at Bagram. His right foot was traumatically amputated and he has shrapnel wounds to both his legs, his right arm and the right side of his back. He was scheduled to be flown to Germany today but was bumped off the flight and will be flown out tomorrow. My thanks go out to the best healthcare professionals in the world for saving Trey's life.

For those who have asked, Trey is Sgt. Thomas Humphrey III, Squad leader, First Platoon, Kilo Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, Sangin, Helmand Province, Afghanistan.


My many, many thanks to all you who have posted here for your kind words or dots "." of support. With tears in my eyes, I am honored by your outpouring. DU is a special place to me because of the caliber of folks who participate here... folks such as each of you. I am finding it a very special place indeed in this time of tribulation.

To all those who had had loved ones harmed or killed - or even safely returned after being put in harm's way - in these two wars begun by chickenshit hawks for their oil interests (yes, even Afghanistan), my heart goes out to you. The young man in question was 27 years old. What a tragic waste for all concerned!

One of my nephews is currently in Iraq, although no longer as US military. He left the army some years back, after having safely served three tours in Afghanistan. But his new assignment, as border patrol in the US, was hardly an improvement given the undeclared war involving Mexican drug cartels. His latest assignment is to train police forces in Iraq, hardly an enviable task and in many ways even more dangerous than being there as military.

If I had the chance literally to tar and feather Bush and Cheney myself before riding them out of the country on a rail and leaving them to the tender mercies of the Iraqis and Afghanis (and those of other nationalities) who have been harmed because of their policies, I believe that I could do it, especially since the leaders of both parties seem disinclined to have them face any sort of accountability in the US even for the harms they have done to Americans.

And I am a person who usually does not favor violence. At all.
