The BFEE fetus in a Jar? Good gawd almighty.

George W. Bush's pro-life stance solidified when he was a teenager in Texas -- after his mother suffered a devastating miscarriage and showed him the fetus in a jar, the former president said in an extraordinary interview that airs tonight.

"She said to her teenage kid, 'Here's the fetus,' " the shockingly candid Bush told NBC's Matt Lauer, gesturing as if he were holding the jar during the TV chat, a DVD of which The Post exclusively obtained.

"There's no question that affected me, a philosophy that we should respect life," said the former president, who had to drive his distraught mother to the hospital at the time.

"I never expected to see the remains of the fetus, which she had saved in a jar to bring to the hospital," Bush writes in his new book, "Decision Points," in an excerpt Lauer read during the interview.

1. Hypocrite to the extreme.
"There's no question that affected me, a philosophy that we should respect life," said the former president

As long as they're not Iraqi and Afghan civilians.

2. OK, if you have a miscarriage, you're supposed to bring the
tissue to the hospital to help the doctor figure out if there is any tissue remaining in the uterus. Also, it may be possible to determine what happened and prevent it from happening again. On the other hand, I would never have handed my 16 year old son a jar with a fetus in it.

Wasn't there a rather solid story going around about George arranging an abortion for a girl friend?

5. Isn't this same family that lost a little girl to cancer and tried to pretend nothing was wrong?

I don't think the boys were ever told directly that their sister was dead or allowed to mourn.

20. I think Poppy mourned while Babs went golfing.
I think his sister's death affected W. I think he saw how nonchalant his mother was over the whole thing and he was shaped by his mother's indifference to her own child's death. At that point, he must have realized how little he mattered to mommy dearest.

22. I don't think it was being nonchalant so much as maintaining the stiffest of upper lips.

'course, in my family everyone goes to the funeral, even the little kids, and I'm sure some would consider that child abuse!

3. It is not respecting life- by putting the remains of a spontanious abortion in a jar.
and passing it around for show and tell with the family children. Maybe it's just my thinking, but that's down right screwy.

16. Take it easy with the sarcasm. Appalling as I find this story,
(not to mention that George is a world class hypocrite), a lot of people here on Du have lost a pregnancy, so be careful that in targeting the Bushes, you don't hurt someone here.

15. That was somewhat different. That was a near term infant who was stillborn.
People have different ways of handling grief. Some people want to hold the dead infant, others don't want to see the body. People should be allowed to do what works best for them.

14. Guffaw!
Did this happen before or after he spent the summer in Scotland, terrorizing the sheep?
Or before or after he might have spent the summer with the royals in Saudis Arabia, watching beheadings?

17. I'll bet it wasn't even a real fetus...
probably pickled pig's feet from the market.

Although I do believe she would be sicko enough to do it...

I wonder if she also showed Georgie her used menstrual pads and pointed out his poor little dead embryo brothers and sisters who missed getting fertilized each month.

25. Hmm by that standard I should have....
turned pro life after I delivered and baptized a five month old product, that was miscarriaged... (Yes it was an emergency baptism using a prayer going back to oh the 12th century as I learned recently, that women learned just in case)

What galls me about that call is that I wish the woman had access to pre-natal care, and then all that tragedy could have been avoided.

So no I won't get nightmares, sorry.
