Noam Chomsky: Outrage, Misguided
from In These Times:

Outrage, Misguided
By Noam Chomsky

The U.S. midterm elections register a level of anger, fear and disillusionment in the country like nothing I can recall in my lifetime. Since the Democrats are in power, they bear the brunt of the revulsion over our current socioeconomic and political situation.

More than half the “mainstream Americans” in a Rasmussen poll last month said they view the Tea Party movement favorably—a reflection of the spirit of disenchantment.

The grievances are legitimate. For more than 30 years, real incomes for the majority of the population have stagnated or declined while work hours and insecurity have increased, along with debt. Wealth has accumulated, but in very few pockets, leading to unprecedented inequality.

These consequences mainly spring from the financialization of the economy since the 1970s and the corresponding hollowing-out of domestic production. Spurring the process is the deregulation mania favored by Wall Street and supported by economists mesmerized by efficient-market myths.

People see that the bankers who were largely responsible for the financial crisis and who were saved from bankruptcy by the public are now reveling in record profits and huge bonuses. Meanwhile official unemployment stays at about 10 percent. Manufacturing is at Depression levels: one in six out of work, with good jobs unlikely to return. ...........(more)

because they aren't voting out the real boss?

Popular culture has been trying to make this point for generations.

16. I guess it depends on what you mean
Industrialization is decoupled from the economy at large. On the other hand we manufacture more than any other country, still.

14. The repukes are superb at misguiding people....
The Dems are not so great at straightening out all that misguidance....or preventing it up front.

15. He's right - but it's more than a doomsday cycle - it's an inherently unequal system.
Hopefully this is the death nell of capitalism.

17. Chomsky is great at preaching to the progressive choir, as are many of us.
The key is, how to persuade the folks on the right he correctly terms "misguided".

20. Chomsky: No Evidence that Al-Qaeda Carried Out 9/11 Attacks
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2010

Leading liberal intellectual Noam Chomsky just told Press TV:

Quote:
"The explicit and declared motive of the war was to compel the Taliban to turn over to the United States, the people who they accused of having been involved in World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist acts. The Taliban…they requested evidence…and the Bush administration refused to provide any," the 81-year-old senior academic made the remarks on Press TV's program a Simple Question.

"We later discovered one of the reasons why they did not bring evidence: they did not have any."

The political analyst also said that nonexistence of such evidence was confirmed by FBI eight months later.

"The head of FBI, after the most intense international investigation in history, informed the press that the FBI believed that the plot may have been hatched in Afghanistan, but was probably implemented in the United Arab Emirates and Germany."

Chomsky added that three weeks into the war, "a British officer announced that the US and Britain would continue bombing, until the people of Afghanistan overthrew the Taliban... That was later turned into the official justification for the war."

"All of this was totally illegal. It was more, criminal," Chomsky said.
