Smile, Your License Plate's on Town's Candid Camera

TIBURON, Calif. (Nov. 7) -- Drive a car into this affluent town on San Francisco Bay and you will be noticed. At least your license plate will.

The small community of Tiburon has begun photographing and recording the license plate of every vehicle that enters or leaves town. The goal is to catch criminals in an area that already has among the lowest crime rates in the state.

"We think it provides a great post-event tool for criminal investigation," Tiburon Police Chief Michael Cronin told AOL News. "Our geography limits access to the community to only two roads, giving us the opportunity to easily identify vehicles associated with crimes."

Tiburon is one of many communities around the country that increasingly are turning to technology to tackle crime, adopting such devices as police officer headcams, robots and laser scanners. In Tiburon's case, recording the license plate of every vehicle is made relatively easy by its isolated location. Tiburon sits on a peninsula that juts into San Francisco Bay, and only two roads lead in and out of town. About 12,000 people live on the peninsula, which also includes the town of Belvedere...

Sounds really boring.

2. A town here in Florida - Lighthouse Point - also does that.
Other municipalities here are considering it as well.

8. Lighthouse Point also gives residents a sticker for their car
Driving around LHP after dark with an unstickered car s an invitation to a traffic stop.

4. Smart crooks will take the ferry
and ride bikes or skateboards to get around. Actually, smart crooks will lift a car right before driving into town and dump it after skedaddling.

I'm glad that I don't live there because I'd have to move.

6. They say it will only be searched in the event of a reported crime, but what does that mean?
Every time a crime is reported in Tiburon, they track down the owner of every non-resident car and investigate them? That sounds extremely creepy to me.

I also wonder if they truly have the ability to lock it down to just crimes reported in Tiburon - I suspect they'll be receiving some interesting inquiries from divorce attorneys and outside agencies before too long, considering that the movements of Tiburon residents will also be recorded...

7. It's supposed to scare you.
You know, like "Big Brother is watching!" or Santy Claus: "He knows if you've been good, he knows if you've been bad." That kind of thing.

10. If I lived in that area
and thought I'd be driving into Tiburon I'd just smear some mud on my plate to make it unreadable.
