KWTX: Bush Unbuckled? White House Fends Off Seatbelt Rumors

(May 22, 2007)—The official White House photograph appears to tell the story.

It shows President Bush at the wheel of his big F-250 pickup Sunday after he and First Lady Laura Bush welcomed NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and his wife to their Crawford-area ranch.

What it doesn’t show is Mr. Bush wearing a seatbelt.

Making matters worse, the photo was taken just a day before law enforcement agencies in Texas and across the country stepped-up enforcement of seatbelt and child safety seat laws in a coast-to-coast effort to get drivers to buckle up and to make sure that children are properly and safely secured.

The annual "Click It or Ticket" program is using checkpoints, patrols and advertisements to enforce seat-belt laws and federal officials say police will be making more traffic stops and writing more tickets, but evidently not to chief executives.

A reporter asked Press Secretary Tony Snow Tuesday whether he had “any luck on finding out about the president’s policy on wearing seatbelts.”

Snow replied, “Well, it's always important to wear seatbelts, especially when driving slowly on the ranch...But I think it's, in point of fact…we encourage everybody to wear their seatbelts,” he said."...

5. I think on private land you can be whatever type idiot you prefer. . .
it's why 12 year olds drive combines on the farm, stored vehicles don't have to be registered, and fools can bounce around pig farms unrestrained. Accidents happen, though, and the laws of physics are rarely mocked -- to all thinking peoples' benefit, I might add.

7. What a stupid answer. Why not just say he was not on a public road and therefore

not subject to the idiotic seatbelt laws.

8. It's be a real bummer if he was driving around trashed without a seatbelt
and hit a feral pig or some uncleared brush or the vice president or somethin' and got injured somehow.

I'm just sayin'.
